Learn more about Ryogawa, Grace, Choufleur and Yuna

To my dear readers,

This week, readers can learn more about Ryogawa, Grace, Choufleur and Yuna! If you haven’t already done so, do give our novels a try!

Translator: Ryogawa

Current novel: The Sword and the Shadow

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you get into this field?

It honestly started out as a hobby which really blew up. Now I translate for approximately 14 hours a week and have been doing that for almost two years straight. Like many readers out there, my first exposure to web novels was Coiling Dragon back in the day when it was still unfinished.

2. Did you choose to translate this novel? If so, why this one?

I chose to translate TS2 because it’s a rather nice change of pace compared to the novels I usually read. The characters are charming and the story alternates between the humor and drama. Also, a good harem is also entertaining in its own right.

3. Use five adjectives to describe your novel

Simple, charming, laid-back, humorous and dramatic.

4. What advice would you give new aspiring translators out there?

Choose a novel you really like and make a habit of translating every day (even a bit a day is enough) so that it becomes no different than breathing!

5. Give us three of your favourite quotes from the novel

Remember, child, true courage isn’t having baseless courage. It’s the ability to retain your hope and faith for the existence of light and kindness in the world even after having experienced its darkness and sin.” – Elder Eiron

You’re not a complete idiot; you know how she feels about you. You have no right to hurt the little angel, do you?” – Kurdak to Leguna

Yes, I’m stupid. People don’t appreciate things they get for free. You didn’t have to fight to have your family, you were just given it, so you didn’t cherish it. I had to fight for what little I have, so I protect it with everything I have. If that makes me a fool, so be it. It’s not really that bad to live the fool’s life, really. At the very least I’m better off than your sorry excuse for a life.” Leguna to Balor

Translator: Grace

Current novel: Unruly Phoenix Xiaoyao

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you get into this field?

My name is Grace! I actually had no intentions of being a translator at first. I was a blogger. I only started translating because I wanted more people to read my blog! XD (You can check out my blog at liveandlearn88.com or some of my posts on Grace Time here!) Eventually, I found out I really do enjoy translating. I am a shameless person myself, so I love shameless MCs. #shamelessgrace #coolgrace #awesomegrace

2. Did you choose to translate this novel? If so, why this one?

I chose to translate Your Highness, I know my wrongs, Supernatural Girlfriend, The Eunuch is Pregnant, as well as Unruly Phoenix Xiaoyao (Ruyi translated the first 269 chapters) because I really like the novels! I like romance comedy. I like laughing and awwing. *laughs and awws* LOL

3. Use five adjectives to describe your novel

All of the novels I translate are: shameless, hilarious, steamy, unpredictable, and dramatic.

4. What advice would you give new aspiring translators out there?

It doesn’t matter how good you are. If no one reads your novel, you’ll still be poor. So pick something you like! If you’re translating purely for $$ reasons, you’re far more likely to give up during tough times.

5. Give us three of your favourite quotes from the novel

The truest emotions are always unplanned.” -Supernatural Girlfriend

Boobs could be flat. Anger can be held back. But my life must not be thrown away!” – Your Highness

Let him go, or else I’ll strip.” – Unruly Phoenix Xiaoyao

Translator: Choufleur

Current novel: Bone Painting Coroner

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you get into this field?

I started reading translated Chinese novels after watching Legend of Yunxi and wanting more… Which led to Ruyi’s Poison Genius Consort via a link in the comments. (-3- Ruyi!) I binged on most of the transmigration stories in Volare, and went looking for more in those nasty aggregator sites (not that i knew that then…). Eventually the bad grammar got to me. I only survived by mentally translating them back to Chinese. Then, I saw the call for translators on Volare… And the rest is history 😉

2. Did you choose to translate this novel? If so, why this one?

Yes, I chose Bone Painting Coroner (one of my fav novels on Volare!), but it was a lucky coincidence as well. Grenn, the previous lead, was going back to do a Masters and could no longer commit; I had just been starting to think about starting a translation project to improve my Chinese while having fun. And a chance to translate an atypical transmigration story with sciency bits? Sign me on! (Fun fact: all of the translators on the team have day jobs relating to healthcare!)

3. Use five adjectives to describe your novel

Mystery, Heartwarming, Romantic, Cliffhangers galore! Reading-this-definitely-counts-as-studying-science (shhh i cheated)

4. What advice would you give new aspiring translators out there?

If you don’t try, you’ll never get better. Laugh at bad translations, marvel at those that manage to get both the meaning and the poetry across.

5. Give us three of your favourite quotes from the novel

Your Highness shouldn’t forget the saying – Heroes die under the hands of a beauty,” – Ji Yunshu to Jing Rong [c.195] (A FL that doesn’t just swoon? \o/)

“Just pretend you’re piecing bamboo slips together. It’ll be fun!” -Ji Yunshu to Wei Yi while piecing together a skeleton. [c. 366]

“‘You’re the Prince and I’m a commoner’. This Prince will remember these words for life. Exactly because of the difference between our statuses, we had to go through all the challenges and hurdles. It wasn’t easy to be able to reach this point of our journey. This is also why this Prince will cherish and love you even more. This will never change in this life and the next.” [c. 389] (d’awww)

Translator: Yuna + Kakaoo

Current novel: Rebirth of a Star: Another Day, Another Drama

1. Tell us about yourself. How did you get into this field?

Ello~ Yuna here! Well… I grew up watching Chinese TV series and during my spare time, I love to read CN web novels. There are so many good web novels out there that aren’t available yet in English, so here I am~~ My wish is to polish my CN reading comprehension and vocab while sharing as many many novels as I can with everyone.

2. Did you choose to translate this novel? If so, why this one?

Nope~ I was initially helping Chiyo with PAH but then I was told that Kakaoo was looking for helpers for this novel, so I’ve decided to help out. Along the journey and all thanks to our great editor-sama, I am now co-novel lead for ROAS (ᗒᗨᗕ).

3. Use five adjectives to describe your novel

Uhmm… ROAS is in general enjoyable, there are fluffy and amusing moments, but also heart-wrenching momentos. Showbiz and revenge, something for you?

4. What advice would you give new aspiring translators out there?

Well… I guess practice makes perfect, right? Just translate all the way and you will be fine 😉

5. Give us three of your favourite quotes from the novel

Very good question, too many to chose from tbh :3

“A person is like half of a circle. Since the day we are born, our other half is somewhere in the world, waiting for us. As we continuously grow, we learn how to search. Then, our long journey of looking for the other half of our circle begins.” – Bainian~

“Why do you think this marriage was a mistake? Why don’t you think of it as a gift from the Heavens?” – Jinyao~

“#My wife is ignoring me, what should I do?? Waiting for online suggestions, quick, quick, quick!!#” – Bainian~
