“I’ll go alone to test the waters first,” said Jia Qizhe to Gu Qingyu when they arrived outside an arched entrance. “This is Murong Ranyue’s private garden. Most of the raw materials he needs for his work can be found here, and past it his private quarters.”
“Okay.” Gu Qingyu nodded.
She watched Jia Qzhe as he walked into the garden, blending in with the shadows.
Suddenly, some flowers close to the entrance started twitching and moving!
“Jia Qizhe!” she loudly whispered.
A calm voice answered, “I’m fine, but stay cautious.” Although she couldn’t see his figure past the bountiful garden full of trees and other plants, just hearing his voice eased her mind.
“Quick! Get inside! Take the chance and move to Murong Ranyue’s quarters! I’ll handle this, just trust me, okay?”
“Mm, I trust you.” Gu Qingyu smiled, and lightly tapped the ground with her foot, jumping up on the arched gate. She remembered the way shown on the map and leapt through the night sky until she swiftly arrived outside Murong Ranyue’s chamber.
Without hesitation, she leapt straight through the window into the room.
Inside stood a shocked, beautiful young man with his mouth slightly open. He had dark green hair and wore a dark-cyan robe.
“Who… are you?”
“I-I’m——” Gu Qingyu immediately regretted her impulsive action. But the deed had been done, so she could only bear with it. “Excuse me, could you be Murong Ranyue?”
He must be it. There is only one person whose room could be filled with this heavy scent of medicine in the Imperial Palace.
“I am he,” the young man answered calmly. His face was completely void of the “a burglar suddenly barged into my room”-panicky expression he had earlier.
“Nice to meet you, my name is Zhu Fan,” she said with the best smile she could manage, to seem more friendly and approachable. “I’ve come to ask for your aura concealment plant.”
“Aura concealment?” His expression seemed puzzled. He sniffed in the air, “Your scent…” His face suddenly went pale, as if all blood had been drained from his body, “You possess the Jewel of Desired Fate?”
It wasn’t a question.
“Uh-huh,” she nodded.
Can he tell just by smelling? Wow.
“Since you know my reason, then please hand it over!”
“Forgive me. I cannot give it to you,” he said flatly and turned around.
“Why not?” she asked, puzzled. “Please, please, puhlease! Help me out!” she pleaded pettishly.
Murong Ranyue was astonished, confounded at this change in her voice.
What’s wrong with this young man??
“Sorry, I really can’t give it to you.” Murong Ranyue walked to the table and grabbed leisurely a fistful of herbs.
“Why do you not listen when I’m asking nicely!” she stamped her feet.
She could only take so many rejections, and thinking back to what Jia Qizhe said about Murong Ranyue, his weakness should be his fighting ability.
I suppose it should be fine if I went heavy-handed on him?
“Forgive me!” She kicked against the floor and surged forward with a roar.
If only she could turn back time, she’d not be so rash again.
Murong Ranyue turned around the split second before Gu Qingyu hit him and tossed the herbs into her face.
Gu Qingyu stopped dead in her tracks and half fell to the ground. She started feeling lightheaded, dizzy and almost drowsy. Her vision swam, and she feared she was going unconscious.
Gu Qingyu collapsed to the ground.
Curse him! I fell… into his trap…
“Gu Qingyu!” Through hazy eyes, she saw the silhouette of a man running to her. It was blue.
“Sorry… I was… not… the plant…”
Gu Qingyu’s whispering voice weakened until it was no more.
“I’m sorry…” In her subconscious, she could hear Jia Qizhe’s guilt-stricken voice, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t quick enough…”
Why are you sorry now? It is all my fault… I should be the one apologizing. Because I disappointed you. Because I couldn’t even get the plant in the end.
The darkness swallowed her whole.
