Chapter 6 Training (Part I)

In the rear castle gardens stood a single cottage, surrounded by a wooden fence. The cottage was built out of clay bricks and the ground was filled with loess, a mixture of sand, silt and clay. There was also a pond in front of the cottage with a circumference of roughly nine and a half yards and with the pond filled with an appropriate amount of river water, this environment was not only difficult to burn but also had a certain manufactured feel, it seemed to be taken right out of a dream. Piled atop the ground were several iron ingots, these came from the blacksmith and were placed there by Carter.

The pond was very charming, Roland had immediately taken a fancy to this place, but as for a laboratory, this place was still too crude. Roland shook his head, realizing that using some random materials and having them build a perfect lab was not possible. If he could find a suitable place in the future and collected all the resources, he would get Barov to start making him a workshop.

Calling Anna over, who had been resting in the cottage, Roland asked, “How are you? Did you sleep well?”

Looking at the bewildered Anna who emerged, Roland smiled.

The witch Roland saw now and the witch he saw yesterday looked like two completely different people. After a thorough cleaning, her long flaxen hair draped over her shoulders like a shawl and had a soft and shiny luster. Although her skin hadn’t been maintained due to her rough life as a commoner her youth made up for it, and the light dusting of freckles which were on the bridge of her nose added a youthful vitality to her face. Her body was still thin and looked as if a strong breeze could push her down, but her cheeks with a rosy color and the bruises and marks on her neck were much faded from yesterday. Roland suspected that witches received an improvement of their physical capabilities in addition to their magic.  At least Anna’s recovery rate had to be much faster than the average person’s.

“Originally, since you experienced so many terrible things, you should be allowed to rest a few days, however our need at this time is very urgent, so I’ll compensate you later,” Roland said before telling the girl to turn around in a circle. “This dress, does it fit well?”

Anna now wore clothes he had carefully selected from a variety of styles, all in order to satisfy his lewd tastes. The full protective clothing that the iron workers wore was too thick and not suitable for her, while the robes many mages wore in games appeared to be elegant and classy, in real life they restricted the mobility of the wearer and would quickly be turned to ashes. As for maid dresses, hey, is there any better clothing than this?

Even if this world had no modern maid outfits yet it was not a big problem, the usual maid clothes were what the later generations were based on after all. So Roland directly took a set of clothes from Tyre and cut it to Anna’s size, shortened the skirt, changed the long sleeves to short sleeves, made the the round neck collar become folded and then tied it into a bow, thereby creating the new witch uniforms.

This was matched with a witch hat (customized), black boots (ready), as well as a knee length cape (ordered). In the past, Roland could only see this type of costume in a movie, but right now, one stood in front of him, looking so much like a witch from earth lore.

“Your Highness, you … What do I need to do for you?” Anna asked.

Anna really could not keep up with the ideas of the great man in front of her, she felt that she was losing her ability to judge the situation. Being dragged out of the dungeon with a bag over her head, she believed she would soon be liberated of her cursed life. But after taking off the headgear, Anna found herself not seeing the gallows or the guillotine, but a magnificent room. Then a bunch of people flooded in, undressing and bathing her. From her armpits to toes, nothing was left unpolished.

Next, it was the dressing room, Anna did not expect that she would have needed all these dresses to serve someone. She also never knew that clothes could actually be so comfortable, as they laid gently on her body, it was possible to feel the slightest friction.

Finally, a white-bearded old man had entered the room, and after he ordered everyone else to step out, he had placed a contract in front of her. At this moment Anna realized, the man who had had said he wanted to hire her in the dungeon was actually this kingdoms 4th Prince. When he said he wanted to employ her, it was not a joke. The contract clearly stated that if she worked for the prince, she would be paid a gold royal every month.

Of course, Anna knew what receiving a gold royal a month meant, her father, who had worked in the mine all day, had had his pay determined by the amount of ore he was able to mine, but the best haul he ever had was only worth one silver royal. One hundred silver royals could be converted to a gold royal, and even this depended on the purity of the silver royals. So, was her job to accompany the prince while sleeping? When she was bathing, Anna had heard the maids whispering, but she didn’t think she was worth this price. With her blood tainted by the devil, she was a person full of filthiness. After she was exposed everyone knew her real identity, even if the prince’s curiosity was compelling to this extent, even if he did not fear the devil, he did not need to pay her any remuneration at all.

That night, however, no one came, and she fell asleep peacefully. It was the softest bed Anna had ever slept in, so she just laid down and immediately fell asleep. The next day when she opened her eyes it was already noon, lunch had already been served in her room, delivered were bread with cheese and meats. Before, she had obviously been ready to die. She had even decided to willingly give up her life to atone for her “sins.” Those were her original thoughts, but after tasting the luxurious meal, Anna could not help it, tears started running down.

Sauces and seasonings were mixed within her mouth, a strong hint of a spicy flavour mingled with a sweet taste, attacking, again and again, her taste buds… Suddenly, she felt that the world was a little bit brighter.

Anna felt that if she could eat this food every day, then even if demons attacked her body, she would have more courage to resist, right?

Now standing in this garden which resembled an old temple, nothing like her prison cell, Anna secretly made up her mind. Since the other party needed her, so whether it was to wear strange clothes, or even using the incredible devil’s power, she was willing to try. So she repeated her question, but this time, she did not hesitate.

“Your Highness, what do you need me for?”

“Right now, I want you to learn to control your own strength, try it over and over until you can send out your flames and receive them back freely.”

“You mean the devil’s-”

“No, no, Miss Anna,” Roland interrupted her, “this is your power.” The witch blinked with her eyes, her beautiful, big blue eyes.

“Most people in the world have the misconception that the powers of the witches belong to the devil, that they are incredibly evil, when, in fact, they are wrong,” Roland bent his body down and met her eyes with his own on an equal level. “But you already figured that out, right?”

Roland remembered Anna’s chuckle in the dungeon, would a person who felt they were evil have laughed with such self-mockery?

“I did not use my power to hurt anyone else,” she murmured, “Except for that looter.”

“Self-defence is not a sin, you did the right thing. People fear you because they do not understand you, they only know that with training witches can become strong fighters, but they do not know how to become a witch. Unknown power is always scary. “

“You’re not afraid,” Anna said.

“Because I know your power belongs to you,” Roland laughed, “but if that looter had such an incredible strength, I wouldn’t calmly stand in front of him.”

“Well, let’s get started,” he said.

  • Odisse Omnes

I like the story so far, would better if the MC wasn’t being a pervert (groping the maids ass and lusting after a girl in a maid uniform) I like my novels and my porn separate, let’s have none of that here, please and than you

  • Xegqu

    Thanks for the chapter

  • xenotypos .

I really don’t like the (stupid) contempt the mc has for the era he was transported in.
First, he was mocking the people there, so barbarian and ignorant, because they were thinking that witchs had powers. He had no way to know they weren’t really using magic, but was still convinced he was right. He was wrong. Now, he’s again full of contempt because those backward barbarians think the witch’s power comes from the devil, and he’s magically convinced without any proof that it doesn’t. What an enlightened man, wait how does he know this? the same way he “knew” witches had no power?
Arrogant and presumptious, that’s what the mc is.

    • Sakamaki Izayoi

Hmm? He was skeptic, would you believe magic exists if someone you just met said so? Even more if said person is attempting to kill someone who he says has it without watching? And whom he claims to be really strong but somehow got caught easily and is not attempting to scape? Not to mention they say said person is evil yet has shown no evil act? Not even seeking revenge? Would you?

      • xenotypos .

By definition, he isn’t skeptic since he’s SURE he’s right. He was sure magic did not exist (though he had no way), but let’s let that slide since it’s not my point. My point was: he should use that experience to not make the same mistake twice. “Do not presumptiously think you’re right without reason while you don’t know shit about this world”, that’s what he should said to himself. He has certainties based on how witch hunts from the middle ages are seen in our modern society, but that’s totally irrelevant: it’s another world.
He SHOULD be skeptic, he isn’t: now he’s sure the power isn’t from devil or something.

        • Maybe, the histoty of the church is a layer on this topic, at the dark age, the church always keep’s power through lies. maybe the author take that into account for the MC to get a conclution!!!

  • Sage Verdurous Sea Turtle

    thanks for the chapter!

  • ambi

Thanks for the chapter! Can’t wait for the rest of the kingdom to take notice.

  • Witches didn’t exist. A mechanical engineer only talks through the computer. Now witches exist but they aren’t evil. Mc is not surprised by this and now he is an expert in finance. Still so boring going to drop.

    • Kinglight

to be fair, with a full college education, i doubt its that hard to manage Medevil times economics. Even merchants and finance ministers back then only had the most basics of maths.

      • Rebel Against The Harem

Indeed. Medieval economics is simply shit, demand=supply. Boom done. There aren’t any complex financial instruments, no banks, few to no government oversight.
        Its extremely simple shit.

I’m pretty sure any high schooler can run the finance department of any medieval country. Its not like they have Centralized banks, notes, bonds, stocks, loans, interest rates, etc.

        • xenotypos .

While it wasn’t comparable with the complexity of economy nowadays, it wasn’t that simple either. At the very least, it depended on “when” in the middle-age (after the 12th century’s renaissance things diversified a little) and “where” (Italian city states had sometimes relatively more complex systems). Loans and interest rates existed, and one thing you to be careful about was the actual value of the multiple currencies that existed, which could change quickly even at a designated place. Merchants weren’t fools.

    • .

Bigoted opinion had caused many people to dropped on many good reads and shows limiting themselves, I even experienced that myself too. So its too bad for you then.

  • again… naive.

I would have interrogated her. While the power might be in her control, there is little guarantee that she hasn’t actually contracted with a demon or some sort in order to receive that power. I would interrogate her on the first time she became aware of the power, whether she felt any particular entity involved, or whether it was just some… instinct thing (assuming that it is something inherent in her body).

All of these are likely given a random world where physical laws are a mere suggestion. I would give an air of doubt that there was any devil, of course, to get the same encouragement shown ehre… but I would at least still ask.

    • Kinglight

i believe, he just doesn’t care/highly doubts that it is an actual devil/demon. Also for it to be devil and demon, needs devils and demons. But regardless, even if that is so, its still a nessesary thing to ally with the witches, if he wants to achieve anything.

    • Rebel Against The Harem

Occam’s Razor: The explanation with the least assumptions is the correct one.
Explanation 1: Witches can control a form of energy in this world through quasi-telekinesis.
      1. There is a different form of energy in this world.
      2. Witches can control it with thoughts

Explanation 2: A devil with them the witch
      1. There are superior high powered beings (gods), in this world
      2. They can grant powers to humans, only females because they are perverts.
      3. The god giving them powers is a “devil” or “evil” and not “good”
      4. Witches are given the ability to control the power.
      5. A “contract” between a devil and a witch can exist
      6. The devils give energy to the witch to use their powers.

Those two explanations cannot coexist, as one would invalidate the other. One implies that it is a natural law or aspect of the universe. The second implies that it is an artificially created construct of the world due to a being with infinite power.

Besides, I come from the modern world, and I am chinese, raised almost purely atheistic. I hate religion, and think its retarded. I come from a world where witch hunts already exists, and where magic is 100% bullshit because it doesn’t exist yet. And I don’t believe in any super beings or gods, or devils, so why would I even consider that? Considering that it was given by a devil means you believe they exist in some way, which, a person who doesn’t believe they exist would ever consider.
And lastly, because I have a brain.

Those are his thoughts. And I know, because he did the exact same things as I would, and believed the exact same things that a modern person would.

      • -Tyrael-

Not only are you aggressively bigoted, but you also pretty much contradicted yourself. I’m also a ‘modern’ person and happen to disagree with you.

The very first thing he saw her do broke the 2nd law of thermodynamics. That contradicts a major scientific law, why wouldn’t you assume that was magic? Using your occam’s razor example, her powers being magic really would be the simplest solution. As for your idea of quasi-telekinesis, why would anyone jump to that conclusion?

I also find unlikely that witches are contracted with a devil, but there’s no evidence stating it’s a purely natural phenomena either. Jumping to either conclusion so quickly just makes you an idiot, not a scientist.

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • Thanks for the chapter =D

  • Hmm. Is the MC truly from our world? Perhaps the Author is an atheist or agnostic. Having read books of authors like Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, R.A. Salvatore etc there are often evil forces. The power itself can be evil… Thanks for the chapter!

    • Proxy Account

      *Squints eyes*
      Brandon Sanderson, you say?
*stares at you for a couple of seconds*
ey, we got a Shard-Brother here!

    • Cadi Levox

I am a Catholic myself, and when I read the medieval-Renaissance history of Europe, I would not want the church to run a kingdom. This guy, whether he’s an atheist, I will pretty much do the same thing if I was in his shoes.
Even tho I have faith in God, I will never have faith in the Church.
Indeed because there is evil in power, the church before the recent times have committed unimaginable crimes that they themselves call “sins” but have done anyway because no one is more powerful than them.

    • Rebel Against The Harem

Not everyone believes in a polar world of only good and evil, or that they exist. There are diverse opinions in the world. Many people don’t believe in gods or devils, because they have come to the conclusion that they don’t exist, of if they do exist, they don’t deserve our worship for created such shit in the world.

So yeah, nowadays, this type of person, would immediately think “superpowers” instead of “magic from the devils”, is more common.

Besides, this world only has grey. Evil and good is simply a construct of society.

      • -Tyrael-

So wantonly breaking major scientific laws can only be superpowers, not magic? Whether they really do get their powers from devils or not (probably not), jumping to the conclusion that they don’t, without any evidence, is pure foolishness.

      • WeakestDemonLord

When you reach the point that the laws of phisics themselves have been broken, then the existence of a superior being is possible , you forcefully denying the possibility of it just for your emotions doesn’t really make you a skeptical person at all

  • Sim

How can the MC be o sure that the power did not come from the ‘Devil’ or other dark forces. He is trying to act genresavy bu he truth she has no idea where magic comes from. I could be a neutral power or it really could be power given by evil meant to corrupt those who use it.

    • Roxerer

The MC will later tell his reason, why he thinks the witches are not evil. The reason why the witches are known as devil’s servants will be also explaned.

    • Here comes Lina Inverse of Slayers and the back música, jaja. I feel the power of black magic in the air!

Ok, jokes aside again, thanks for the translation! GJ!!!

And first harem member GET! (Or second? Tyre??)

    • Rebel Against The Harem

He pretty much explained it. He doesn’t believe in the devil. Not everyone does. And he is one of them, who thinks gods and evils are bullshit, especially if it comes from the word of a “chuch”, who in his world (our world), have been known to spout bullshit.

So the possibility of it being granted “by a devil” is automatically denied by default when you are atheistic. And he is pretty much atheistic.

In other words, “the devil existing” was never an option to being with.

I would be the exact same too, and apply scientifically plausible explanation to a world with superpowers, not fairy tales.

      • WeakestDemonLord

Wait…so…superpowers aren’t fairy tales…ahah…there are 2 type of fools in the world in my opinion , the first one is the one who believe in the existence of god blindly just following what the church says to them , then we have the people who don’t believe in god as blindly as the believers . You’ve come to the point where you are able to accept the existence of superpowers but not the existence of god.

        • Celio Hogane

I mean it’s pretty easy: he has not seen god, but she has seen a girl summoning fire.

She didn’t even used the fire for evil, it was self defense, why would believe defending yourself is an act of evil? She is called a witch, but what she does is just magic, a person of modern days altough impressed, the first thing that would thing is “magic!” no “OH SHIT THE POWER OF A DEVIL”

          • WeakestDemonLord

Yes. That’s right , i’m not saying that he has to react like that , but the moment you see magic you can’t pretend anymore that an existence like god couldn’t exist.

            • Celio Hogane

It is a fair point, but he has no proof of that either, he doesn’t believe that the magic of the witches is evil doing, it’s basically magic, as any science, you only need to understand it.

I understand his point, he is just in a great belief that god doesn’t exist.

              • WeakestDemonLord

magic is by definition not a science since is something that break the rules of this world , an intelligent person would consider all the possibilities , now ,i’m not saying that what the mc is doing is wrong. however , denying the possibility of something that’s actually possible in that situation is foolish.

                • Celio Hogane

It’s only magic to him because he doesn’t understand how it works

Need to remind you, the steam engine would be magic to other people, in fact the witches asumed it’s imposible.

  • *banging my head against the wall* Why? Why so many errors?

    • I’m joining in it as well.
