Chapter 174 Industrial Park

Two days after Ashes departed, beyond all expectation Maggie returned to Border Town, once more appearing in front of everyone.

After understanding the reason, her return then turned into a warm welcome for a new member of the Witch Alliance.

She was greatly moved by the banquet which was a celebration in her honor and was also being held in the castle’s back garden. The top of a long iron shelf had been covered with all kind of meat which was free for anyone to take and barbecue.

The range of seasoning was also very rich, there were salt, oil, chilies, peppers, as well as Roland personally created barbeque sauce. Which was made from cooking a stew made out of all kinds of different mushrooms from the Concealing Forest together with a whole chicken. He also added a mixture out of salt, sugar and wheat flour, which let him forget the non-existent Monosodium Glutamate(MSG). Maggie almost ate to the point of bursting her stomach before she stopped.

On the afternoon of the same day Roland also tested her ability.

According to Nightingale’s judgment, her magical capacity when compared with all the other witches could be described as among the medium level. Furthermore, her ability to freely change any kind of bird was only possible on the premise that she had seen it before. Changing her form used up a comparatively large amount of magic, and during one day she could change her form around 4 to 5 times, while maintaining her shape only consumed very small amount of magic. Her ability could be classified as belonging to the summon type and was also suppressed by the God’s Stone of Retaliation. Her favorite bird to change into was the pigeon, but Roland noted that she would always be a lot bigger than the regular bird no matter in what kind of bird she changed into. For example, if she turned into a sparrow, in Roland’s view, her sized would equivalent to a common pigeon, while if she was to change into a pigeon, she had almost at the same size as a sea eagle.

This point left Roland feeling quite sad that Maggie was incapable of changing into any of the fantasy creatures he had painted for her such as a Phoenix, Griffin, or a Kunpeng.

In addition, to Ashes original intention there was still something else he had to pay attention to, that was the question of, what kind of abilities did the witches gathered by Tilly poses? In case she had many auxiliary witches who could significantly increase the efficiency of farming, he didn’t mind to exchange for them with his technology.

For this reason, Roland decided to write a long letter addressed to Tilly. He started with showing her that they were in a natural alliance, and then warned her about the Church’s intention to unify the continent, and lastly he handed her an olive branch, expressing his desire that they could help each other and in so doing that they could progress together. Now he only had to wait until Maggie went to the Fjords next month, and permit her to deliver the letter without having to go through an extra effort.

The next day, the Prince was welcomed by another piece of good news.

The factory for the production of the steam engines has finally been completed. It was located on the opposite shore of the Redwater River, on the western side, next to Leaves’ experimental field. The entire site was surrounded by a wooden fence, there was also had a smooth and simple road leading to the pontoon bridge. In Roland’s plan, this area would in the future be turned into an industrial park.

As a result of his wish to expand the building space to far out as was possible, the factory was built using a comparatively easy to use wood material, covering an area of ??about 1000 square meters. Anna’s self-built machines had also already been shipped in. There were two steam-driven boring machines, two manual milling machines, a manual grinding machine as well as a manual lathe.

Although the machines were quite simple, at least in theory, its workmanship was nonetheless of the best quality. Apart from the pedals and the other similar parts which were made out of wood, all the other parts were made out of wrought iron or cut out of steel. It could be said that it had been processed from the best materials currently in existence and with the highest possible precision.

Roland feared that he currently would only have ten workers that could come to work in the factory. They were the former town blacksmiths and their apprentices who had seen his presentation in the castle backyard and were now recruited by Roland with a fixed monthly salary of fifty silver royals so that they could learn how to operate the high-end machines. The blacksmiths, together with their forging tools, would all move into the brick house that stood outside the factory. Yet with the exception of some unimportant parts, the steam engine would soon be produced by using only these machines.

To celebrate the opening of the factory and to strengthen morale, Roland decided to gather all the City Hall officials and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and together with a short speech in front of the factory building. With Echo’s simulation of a gun salute, Graycastle Industrial Company had formally announced its establishment.

During the next few days, as the company’s executive Roland came to visit the factory several times. Demonstrating the uses of the machines in person as well as an overall of the steam manufacturing process in general.

The best way Roland could think of to let the illiterate blacksmith grasp the processing and assembling of a steam engine was to map the whole process out. Following the usual process of creating a simple manual, he labeled every part with a name, number and size. Afterward, he used a diagram to show the installation order and the connection pattern. With this task, Soraya had also helped him tremendously in making sure that he could finish this task quickly.

The first few days of production went exactly as he had expected, almost no part that they had made had met the requirements, not even to speak of trying to piece together a whole steam engine.

However, Roland didn’t care about the scrapping rate, in the hands of Anna, in just the blink of an eye, these formerly defective products were soon remade into a new plate. And he believed that with repeated practice, it was only a matter of time before these blacksmiths mastered the production methods to be used in the new era.

In addition to the industrial factory, the Prince also changed the backyard at the North Slope Mine into his own military factory and was now mainly using it for the production of revolver rifles and bullets. Since by now, Karl’s recommended “furnace expert” Lesya had also arrived at Border Town, a new batch of airbags had been installed, substantially increasing the temperature of the furnaces, even making it possible to independently calcining cement powder, making the former calcination room obsolete.

But limited by the current crafting ability, the revolver rifles and bullets production was still completely in Anna’s hands. At this moment, Roland was still busy designing a bullet stamping sheet for a stamping press, although its cutting efficiency wouldn’t be as good as Anna’s direct forming, it could at least reduce her burden.

And also, to thank Anna for nearly half a month of rushed work, he had decided to send her a gift.

“A gift?” Anna put down the recently cut part that was still in her hand and stroked a strand of hair that had slipped in front of her forehead back behind her ear, revealing a brilliant smile, “Well?”

“Don’t you want to know what kind of present it is?” Roland teased her.

“En…” she earnestly reflected on it, and after a moment before she said. “I like all the presents that you’ve given me.”

After six months of being nursed back to health, there was now no longer any traces to discover of her time spent in the dungeon. Where she had previously been thin and weak she was now slim, her blues eyes brimming with spirit. Dressed in a white dress she seemed to be fresh and cool, her whole body seemed to be filled with vitality.

This is what an 18-year-old girl should look like.

When he saw Anna, Roland was unable to stop the corner of his mouth from raising, every time he saw her his mood would always become a lot better.

The so-called “gift” was covered in a layer of linen and placed in the castle courtyard to ensure Anna’s surprise. He had gotten this idea when he had seen how Ashbringer had covered her sword. Since he was the Prince, the gift of course also had to be something special. Presenting something like jewelry or other similar finished products showed off much less sincerity, so he had to think for a long time before he came up with an idea.

When Roland pulled away the linen, a basket weaved with rattan appeared before them, to which the end of many ropes had been tied with the other sides and connected by a vast canvas.

“This is… what?” Anna walked closer and begun to circle around it full of curiosity.

“A hot air balloon,” Roland replied with a smile, “It can take you up into the sky, overlooking the earth like a bird in the sky.”

“Flying up to the heaven?” She turned around, her eyes flashing with excitement, “Can it really do that?”

Soaring into the sky has been the dream of mankind since ancient times, from a hang glider to a hot air balloon, from the airship to the aircraft, for the exploration and challenge of this, humanity has already paid a huge price, but mankind has never given up on its pursuit. Even though witches have always existed in this word, flying was still only a right for the minority. The scenery from up high was bound to leave a deep impression in someone.

“Of course, you just have to fill the airbag at the end of the ropes with hot air.”

Roland had arranged for Nightingale, Lightning, and Maggie to work as emergency personnel. In the case of an accident, with the help of Lightning together and Maggie in her large sea eagle form, the two of them would be able to land safely. As for the other witches, he decided to temporarily not inform them of this, especially Wendy and Scrolls, they would certainly have opposed any of his adventures. In their eyes, he should absolutely never come even close to even the slightest mishap.

  • Does anyone know of a better term to use than “revolver rifle”?
  • Shishui River finally got changed into Redwater River

  • Xegqu

    Thanks for the chapter.

  • Psychronia

It’s just occurred to me that Roland should totally make Lightning a parachute. She would probably love the strange new invention, and she would be the best canidate for testing the product too.

  • comradeprozac

Revolver rifle is fine, but you could use revolving rifle or revolving carbine (

  • ambi

Thanks for the chapter Wolfgang M., Rene J., Roxerer, and KitKat! I wonder if that will be open to the public later as a tourist thing.

  • esya

Roland: I can show you the world~~

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • Paween Hinmuangkao

Revolving rifles are bad Roland. They are known to be more dangerous to shooter than the target. A too long barrel will trap the gas and push it back to the firing chamber which is no problem if it is closed. But revolver are pretty much open rotating firing chamber. The hot gas will leak and heat the whole cylinder. A quick repeated firing will cause cook off

And unlike automatic rifle, that cooking off won’t just spray the whole mag out the barrel. It will discharge all cartridge in the cylinder at once, shredding the shooter arm.

Which is why revolving rifle never gain popularity.

But, if you got the cartridge with primer ready, why don’t you just skip to pump/lever action? that thing is not much more complex than a revolver.

    • M32

A rifle works be detonating a propellant behind a projectile. Once the propellant is consumed, there is no additional pressure accelerating the bullet, so ideally, the bullet should exit the barrel just at that point. If the barrel is too long, then without that gas force, the bullet will slow due to friction against the barrel. That’s the worst that will happen.

The only way gas may travel back is if you are using something too powerful for the rifle and you might also end up shattering your barrel.

In a revolving rifle, both hands are behind the cylinder or you get hit with spalling and jets of hot gas. No one who knows what they’re doing will extend their forearm. So even if it chain fires, you won’t get hurt.

To get to cook off temp, you need to shoot a lot of ammo, on the order of 40-50 rounds continuously (which is really hard to do in a revolver). So it’ll take a while and when your rifle gets there, it won’t do it all at once. It still takes time to heat the round.

  • DudeForDuke

If it has a rotating cylinder that is used to align and fire each round, then “revolving/revolver/cylinder rifle” is the most accurate and best way to describe it.

“Repeating/repeater rifle” is not very descriptive and has been used historically to refer to other types of firearms (the Henry lever action rifle which was tube-fed and used cartridges was called a “repeating rifle” for instance).

“Circuit Rifle” is a reference to the “Circuit Judge” which is a pun on the Taurus Judge with Rossi’s rifle version.

Carbine is really up to interpretation. It’s like deciding when a knife becomes a sword and vice versa. Basically anything can be a carbine, but it tends to refer to shortened versions. If the revolver rifle has a shorter barrel than the muskets Roland made first, carbine would be very fitting to use. If he intends to use it on horseback a’la Dragoons, then carbine fits even better.

    • Nnelg

If I were Roland, I would reserve the revolving rifles for elite skirmish units, since the gap in the cylinder lets gasses escape and reduce range and power. I’d let the infantry use flintlock/caplock rifles, and put more effort into designing a gatling gun. (Not coincidentally, this would result in a very Civil War-esque force composition.)

      • M32

If Roland were smart, he wouldn’t use revolving rifles at all. Training to use this rifle is not only complicated but different from their current rifles. They’ll have to start from scratch and if they forget, they’ll need to visit Nana.

Quite frankly, its weird. Given his engineering expertise, he designs essentially modernized steam locomotives with principles outlined in the story and yet he can’t figure out gas operated firearms which rely on those same principles.

Granted a pistol, with all its smaller components, would be hard but something like an AK should be simple.

Or maybe that just shows he isn’t all knowing. Thinking about it, he hasn’t even thought of barbed wire.

        • Nnelg

Gas-operated firearms are still impossible to manufacture for him, even with Anna.

First off, a large, high-quality steel spring is needed, and that can’t be made just by cutting. It needs to be _extruded_ precisely. Al the other parts need machining with a precision that his factories won’t be able to mamage for several years at the bare minimum.

But perhaps more important is the propellant. Regular black powder can’t be used, there isn’t enough gas produced by it (not to mention the fouling problems). An advanced smokeless powder formulation is required, which would be nigh impossible to produce in large enough quantities to feed an army using available methods… Unless he somehow aquires more alchemists than soldiers.

Anyways… Assault rifles aren’t the right weapon for this job. Their rapid-fire capability is only useful for _suppressing fire_; recoil limits the number of rounds that *actually hit* per minute to be on-par with semi-automatics.

Barbed wire has a similar problem to the springs. Besides, a simple ditch filled with sharpened wooden spikes does the same job for much cheaper. It takes longer to deploy, but in this era armies don’t move very fast.

  • zomba

Rifles with a round cylinder like on revolvers are commonly referred to as ‘Cylinder Rifles’ or ‘Revolving Rifles’.

    Thanks for the reliable translations.

    Thank you for the chapter

  • Xester

Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked!

Roland’s antics remind me of the Fire Nation.

  • mllhild

The name Revolver Rifle is correct and precise. The name sounds a bit dumb, but this is just because you don’t hear it often.

    • Lujusi

Yeah, but if Roxerer insists on changing it how about calling it “Circuit Rifle”? And if you did a google search of that you will be shown the images of cool looking Rossi Circuit Judge rifles which I’m hoping for Roland’s finished product of revolving rifle to look alike.

      • DudeForDuke

“Circuit Rifle” would not be accurate at all. The “Circuit Judge” has that name because it’s literally a pun. Rossi worked with Taurus (Taurus puts out a .410 revolver called the “Judge”). Since this is a larger, rifle, version they added “Circuit” to it since a Circuit Judge is a higher authority than a regular judge.

“Circuit rifle” isn’t a historical term for revolver/revolving rifles, however. It’s entirely modern and referring to a single model.

  • Crux

One of the earliest repeating rifles came out as a very inefficient Gatling gun but there was also a revolver rifle, which in all practicality is a revolver mechanism on a long rifle grip and long barrel.

Until he gets to tubular magazines, clip magazines or standard magazines, he probably literally means revolver rifles. So you don’t have a reason to change it at this point.

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • Jikeidan

For names, revolving rifle would be the most accurate to describe what he’s building if it’s a rifle with a multi chamber revolver mechanism. You could alternatively go with repeating rifle, although that’s an historically different weapon. It could conflict if he later decides to make a lever action repeating rifle that can be loaded with multiple rounds at the same time, like the seven shot Spencer repeating rifle or the Winchester repeating rifle. Also, it’s worth noting that there’s a difference between a rifle and a carbine, with a carbine having a shorter barrel or firing bullets meant for a pistol. If he’s using revolver rounds and mechanisms I’d say it’s closer to a carbine so “revolving carbine” might work best.

  • Frosty Whiterock

Revolver rifles were called revolving rifles and colt made quite a few back in the day

  • Von Wilhelm

Revolvers with stocks and long barrels tend to be called a few things.
Repeating Rifle and Carbine Revolver are the most common if I remember correctly.

  • Zeth

    Thank you!!!!!
    Revolver rifle, maybe semi-automatic rifle?

    • DudeForDuke

Most revolving rifles that were made, especially the early ones that were still using early cartridges or black powder, were single-action. Meaning you had to pull the hammer back and then pull the trigger for each round you fired.

  • Shadowmouse

Circute judge is a type of. Rifle with a revolver style receiver

I kinda feel sorry for Nightangle seeing Ronald pamper Anna ._.

  • MangoGuy

    Bird still hasn’t told anything.

  • Kuq Ku

Would it be possible if Maggie sees a 3d rendering of an animal that she could also copy it, like a sculpture? she doesnt see the birds internal structure does she? or is this an automatic transformation thing without taking that into account?

If Roland made a hot air balloon then I guess gliders, parachutes might be good to create too 😀 then eventually planes as well 🙂 soon we will be getting submarines too heh lol

  • phyrigia

Too bad maggie can not change into phoenix. Haha… maybe roland picture drawing is not that great? He should make the bird sculpture instead. I bet that way maggie can transform into it.

    • Kuq Ku

Lol we had the same idea haha

  • The Theo

AFAIK there are revolving rifles/carbines IRL. Those terms imho should suit better than revolver rifle.
    Here’s wikipedia article's_New_Model_Revolving_rifle

  • xNullSkillz

revolver rifle should be something like a lever action rifle from winchester right?

    • Kevin Shaw

No, a revolving rifle has a rotating cylinder like a revolver that contains the ammunition. You can also think of revolving rifles like a revolver with a rifle stock and an extended barrel. What Roland has created most likely is a revolving rifle that uses the trigger pull or cocking the hammer to rotate the cylinder. Not sure if Winchester has toyed with the idea but Colt certainly has.

      • Davain

How ’bout “revolving rifle” which is what they were historically know as before the “lever action” became available.

  • Om nerabdator

” In their eyes, he should absolutely never come even close to even the slightest mishap.”

thats a given, if he dies the one place they can build a home will collapse

  • Maxi King

so i just realized isn’t roland creating some kind of steampunk empire?

    • FishWithoutMercy

hmm more like an industrial revolution 😀 with witches 😀

  • cbfarrar

What is with it and these other world MC’s and their photographic memory?! How the hell can they remember all this crap?

    • FishWithoutMercy

dunno bout the food stuff like the monosodium thingy(tbh never heard of it…), but the engineering aspects are not too high level so far, pretty doable 😀

      • Kik Heirtothestar

Monosodium Glutamate(MSG), an flavour enhancer, is very well-known in eastern world’s food culture…

        • FishWithoutMercy

well, i`m an mechanical engineering student so… 😀 thanks for the info tho!:D

          • timbone

To you the engineering parts seems very doable. To us(who studied something else) not so much
MSG and others are very easy to us

            • Ahmad Khairudin

i think in this particular novel, MC has background in engineering, so that he can make all those engine

              • FishWithoutMercy

Yeah it is stated that he was a mechanical engineer, and apparently a designer at that, he is supposed to be good at this, although the chemistry part is a bit… 😀

              • timbone

That wasn’t the point. I was pointing out to a reader that we have different specialties

          • I’ve known of MSG since a child, my grandma used it on every meal here on southamerica

    • Baka Hiru

would of been better if they added Roland as a super genius with IQ xxxx from our world. Then we wouldn’t be surprised why he knows so much pioneering.

    • Deman Bloodx

Sad, but true photographic memory doesn’t exist.

    • NickC

His backstory is a mechanical engineer designer who literally worked himself to death because he was that obsessed with his work. There’s nothing he’s done that somebody with a bachelor’s in engineering and a decade of hands-on work experience couldn’t do fairly easily.

Honestly, I expect most of the things he’s done somebody who works in a metalworking shop and is a bit of a gun otaku could do.

    • Just Physics

from the moment you choose some course in school it will reflect what you like ,luv bringing specialty dont tell me you chose yours cause someone tell u to do so.. even i remember most of the stuff i learn as a physicist its all like Newton and an apple its about why is that ,why does it fall straight its part of questioning then ur brain process it as an understandable knowlegde because of experience then basic knowlegde is inserted then birthed questioning then cycle , so u get the cycle of basic stuff or origin then at last knowledge dont ask me either why i remember those cause i dont really know..
i just think and stress my trembling brain of what i did that day, ur brain is limitless , but if you tell me about math except for mathematical physics forget most of this parts, finance and shit with further debate i will ultimately loss.. common i dont like that shit

  • phyrigia

    the fastest bird ever: plane
maybe she could turn into eagle / falcon / perhaps phoenix / griffin / hippogriff?
though I think she might only be able to transform if she have eaten the bird before…

    • Royaldarkness

maybe you will be get a little dissapointing here, but at least she can transfer to the special type of bird in the next evolution (forget what it word),if you want to know more, check the raw

If maggie can transform to any bird then i would like to see her transform into a velociraptor/T rex or any dinosaurs

    • Neruz

Birds are dinosaurs, but not all dinosaurs are birds. Also she likely needs to have at least seen the bird she is transforming into; how would she transform into something that she doesn’t even know what it looks like?

Keep in mind that we don’t actually know what dinosaurs looked like, we can guess based on their skeletal structure and inference from other living beings and their descendants, but in the end apart from basic information like ‘velociraptors had feathers, they were probably primitive fluffy feathers’ we don’t actually know much in the way of details. Like what colours they were.

      • phyrigia

i think her transforming into bird, have something with how her eating the bird. does she also eat pigeon, owl, etc? maybe she can transform into eagle?

        • Ragef33

According to Ashes, she never ate any bird, until Lightning coaxed her into it. Now she can’t get enough of it.

          • Neruz

Yeah it has nothing to do with eating birds. Likely she either has specific bird forms she can take, or she can mimic any bird she has seen before. Interestingly it seems like her overall body mass remains the same, which is why she turns into a really huge fat bird.

  • SeraphiMaelstrom

A fat bird is a delicious bird… Feed her more to tame her… Then Eat her guehehehehe

  • Inderaa Takamvra

They repaid Roland hospitality by spying? humph

    • SeraphiMaelstrom

I don’t think it is spying. More like giving a proper reason for Maggie to stay in Border Town because she is conflicted on whether to stay or to leave with Ashe. In a way it is good for Roland as he can now communicate with Tilly.

    • Алексей Пугач

Can’t call it spying since they’re in the open about it

  • egofighter

    the spy is planted ugh

    • Royaldarkness

well, your expectations are not right here

      • Deyna

        Hey Royal,

You were warned, mate. Roxerer’s been clear that the comment section should stay spoiler free, and you’ve been posting spoilers for the last two weeks even after you were warned. If you’re going to ruin the story for others, then this isn’t the place for you.

  • Kuq Ku

The Maggie and Lightning combo would be devastatingly moe, I might die from nose bleeds.

  • Maxi King

i wonder if she could transform into a terrorbird…

    • Kuq Ku

Naw go for the big ones like the Argentavis or Quetzalcoatlus 🙂 they might be able to dig up some fossils that she can perhaps copy somehow 🙂

      • Terry Wijaya

        Are u somehow play ark?
