Chapter 171 The Gift of Revenge (Part 2)

“Demon!” Alicia drew her two-hand-sword and stepped protectively in front of Mira.

“… Demon?” Her voice was cold, didn’t bare any emotion, “That’s the way, you call those orphans and abandoned babies who are sent to the monastery to get raised, from whom you chose your own witches?”

“What are you talking about?!” The warrioress snapped back, “The church shelters them because of God’s kindness. Without the Church’s mercy, how many of them would be able to survive until their day of adulthood? But the pervasive Devil will always corrupt the weakest of them, leading a very small number of girls astray. But as soon as it is discovered that one of them degenerated into a witch, the Church will immediately treat the fallen ones. You are totally turning the cause and effect upside down!”

Hearing the word “treat”, the golden pupil of the witch dimmed by a lot, raising her large sword with one hand she declared. “I’m not too interested in persuading a dead person anyway. So be it.”

Even before her voice had faded away, the owl spread her wings and flew into the sky, and the witches figure rushed forward. Alicia could still clearly remember how her comrades had tragically tried to defend themselves and had instead been split in two, so she decided, I will never retreat, I have to advance forward.

Facing the right-handed extraordinary, she threw herself to the lower right sight just like she had trained in her fencing lesson. Her instructor had mentioned it more than once, if the enemy is heavily relying on their right hand, the bottom right will be the most difficult position for them to reach. After all, their sword grip is limiting their movement, so if they wanted to change the direction of the blade, they would first need to spend an additional half a breath to change their grip.

Closely avoiding the beheading strike with her leopard like dive, she immediately grasped her own two-handed sword and slashed at her the moment she passed the enemy’s body. But the extraordinary reaction was too fast, with a small jump she easily avoided Alicia’s counter swept, and also simultaneously changed the direction of her greatsword.

Until now, Alicia hasn’t even landed yet.

Within a flash, the sword cut through half of her calf, with it sending blood into the sky. Sending a tearing pain throughout her whole lower body, almost making her lose her consciousness. Instinctively gritting her teeth, she was luckily strong enough not shout out on the spot from the pain.

The gap is too great.

She now understood, how hard had Abrams task been to give them so much time to escape, after all he was able to exchange ten or so moves with the extraordinary.

Alicia struggled to turn around, she was just in time to see how Mira removed a hidden hand crossbow from her back, and see her raise her hand and aim it at the body of the unaware extraordinary witch.

This is my last chance, she realized, perhaps, if Im able to grab her attention!

But before she could even think about what she could say, a greatsword swept over with the force of a whirlwind. She then only felt her throat became tight, and then her world had turned upside down…

No, perhaps it’s I who am flying, and then, she saw how her own body was unable to support itself any longer and fell onto its knees. At the same time, she saw the owl flew over in the direction of Mira. Turning into a girl in midair and severely hitting the official… Afterward, Alicia line of sight quickly began to blur, as she finally hit the ground, falling into a boundless darkness.

“That  damned stone!” Maggie touched her head while complaining out loud, “You were too careless, if it wasn’t for my help just then, you would have been hit by that crossbow’s arrow!”

“Rest assured, I had already noticed, I was just intending to end this quickly,” using her sword, Ashes quickly dug out a shallow pit. And after plundering their bodies she then immediately threw them into the pit and covered it once more with mud. By putting the plundered God’s Stone of Retaliation and gold royals into her own bag, she now had enough money on her to pay for her way to the Port of Clearwater.

On the body of the woman who had worn the robe she had also found a letter, roughly skimming over it, she had discovered that the contest of the letter only became relevant if Roland Wimbledon, Lord of the Western Territory, was not collaborating with the witches. In this case they had offered to buy baby girls and orphans from him, exactly as they had done previously with Duke Ryan. As long as the woman were still minors they would buy all of them, and also pay the regular “market” price. Furthermore, they could also help him if he wanted to be paid with pills.

Reading the letter Ashes began to sneer in disgust, placing it over the torch to lit it up, burning it one and all.

“Come on, we have still some other bodies left to bury.”

Goo.” Maggie changed into an owl, then guided Ashes back to the site of their first attack.

Digging, carrying, burying the men… Unable to help with this physically strenuous tasks, Maggie wasn’t too busy. In addition, seeing the disabled limbs, the cut off arms and smelling the air that was reeking of blood made her all feel a little dizzy. So, she was now sitting on a branch, watching how as Ashes kept herself busy.

“For what reason was it so important for you yourself to do this? Wouldn’t it be bad if the Church finds out they are dead?”

“By the time they discover that their messenger group has disappeared, it will already be two or three months later,” Ashes explained, still using her sword as shovel,

“When they usually send out an envoy to investigate a witch incident, in the event that the Lord is cooperating with them, the investigation will still last much longer than one month, in addition to the time they will need to return, it would usually take them almost two or three months long.”

“But His Royal Highness wouldn’t have cooperated with them!”

“As long as you allow the messenger into the Town, the Witch Cooperation Association will be exposed. They don’t need to ask the Prince himself, the can just randomly grab hold of some people from the street and after torturing them they will soon know the answer. So, Roland is only left with two options, either selling off the witches and saying that he has nothing to do with them or kill the envoys by himself. But if the other side was to plan for something like that in advance, as long as even one of them was able to escape. Hermes would soon receive a message about it. After all, they are also carrying messenger pigeons with them.

“Pigeons can’t see the road at night, so I was be able to catch all of them,” Maggie said, patting her bulging pockets, “Just wait until tomorrow, we can go roast and eat them.”

Ashes was secretly shaking her head, previously she had never seen Maggie eat a bird, but now, after the first few days in Border Town, she had actually developed a strong interest in them.

“The moment the Church decides to dispatch their army, he will only have one month left, but for now, as long as his luck is not too bad, he will be able to last for three more months… So, this is the gift I promised him, at the same time I also got my revenge on the Church.”

“So that was the reason, as expected of you, sister Ashes,” Maggie praised.

There was still something Ashes still didn’t say, with her killing them, Ashes had made the decision for the Prince, and when the Church finds out that they had lost contact with the envoys, they would certainly blame Roland Wimbledon for it. With this, he wouldn’t even get a chance to sell off the witches.

When everything had finally been properly put in order, the horizon had already begun to turn white.

“With this, it’s now time for us to part,” Ashes said.

“…” Maggie didn’t understand what she meant, “What?”

Ashes stepped in front of Maggie, squatted down and touched her small head, “You want to live in Border Town, don’t you? Here you have Lightning and Wendy, so you will certainly be very happy.”

“But…” Maggie lowered her head, a look of hesitation written on her face, “I also like you and Lady Tilly.”

“It’s not the case that you will have to be here all the time,” Ashes laughed, “Roland Wimbledon, unlike Tilly, is an ordinary aristocrat, so it’s hard to be sure that he will always be on the side of us witches. So, your mission will be to fly back once a month, telling us everything that has happened in Border Town. Furthermore, you can also bring our messages to the witches of the Witch Cooperation Association, this way our two sides can establish regular contact. If the town is ever in any danger, you can also help them escape from the Kingdom of Graycastle and move to the Fjords.”

“It’s like that, is it!” Maggie blinked unsure of what to say.

“Yes, it is,” Ashes nodded. “I’m convinced that you can accomplish this.”

Seeing Maggie turning into a pigeon and gradually disappearing with the first rays of the morning sun, Ashes turned around, mounted a horse, and advanced in the direction of the Port of Clearwater.

  • TheFatDelinquent

Did Alicia died? All that plot surrounding her ended just like this.

  • Xegqu

    Thanks for the chapter.

  • Shiro

So all that focus on Alicia and now she is just buried in the woods …
Was expecting she becoming a witch , or changing sides.

  • Mym Zy

Ashes is beyond help atm, her mind is so addled by her oh-so-wonderful-tiily-imawitch-sama
    She cant see Mt Tai!

  • SanitaryCockroach

    RIP the mislead Alicia.

  • ambi

Thanks for the chapter Roxerer, Jatz, and KitKat! Well the three months will be useful for Roland to develop new weaponry anyways. Too bad he couldn’t get any combat data though.

  • ศุภวิชญ์ เทียนจารุวัฒนา

    So Alicia is died?

    • VLOCKUP

Her head got separated from her body(she literally saw her own body fell in front of her), so yeah.

Shame. From the time when she and Abrams are introduced, I thought they would be the ones who have doubts in their belief when Roland exposed them(Abrams have doubts already) but it seems the muscle-brained Ashes can’t resist the temptations of slaughtering the common Church folk.

She and Heather are by far the worst girls I have the pleasure to read in this novel. In fact, Ashes seems more like a feminist, much for my liking.

  • cbfarrar

Ashes also left a lovely edible arrangement on Roland’s desk as an extra gift.

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter,
    Such a “good” person

  • Balanite

Hello, thanks for the chapter! Just some comments if you like.

“So, Roland is only left with two options, either selling off the witches and saying that he has nothing to do with them or kill the envoys by himself.” and “With this, he wouldn’t even get a chance to sell off the witches.”

“selling off” can be replaced with “betraying/betray the witches”

“So that was the reason, really worthy of you, sister Ashes,” Maggie praised.

Maybe this flows better: “”So that was the reason, as expected of you, sister Ashes,” Maggie praised.”

“If the town is ever in any danger, you can also help them escape from the Kingdom and Graycastle and move to the Fjords.”

I believe this should be “Kingdom of Greycastle.”

As always, keep up the good work!

    • Roxerer

As always thank you for the input.

      – I deliberately chose “sell off” because the Church would give him money for the witches.

      – you’re right that sounds better

      – yes, that should be Kingdom of Graycastle

    • VLOCKUP

Gray, grey, what’s the difference? They are literally the same thing 🙂

  • Danis

    thanks for the chapter 😀

  • Gaspar

We need Roland to create… The Technocracy! And be his first High Techpriest! Hail Science!!

But truth be told, is not a bad idea, if he does not create something too fill the hole the “spirituality” of a religión fills, they may start believing weird things..
    Like the Church here.

  • Kuq Ku

I dont hate her either, but shes too muscle brained to be someone Id automatically like, she doesnt see the deeper picture, only the “This is my goal, I will do everything towards that goal” to much tunnel vision, much like how she was hell bent on killing that Arch Bishop (which she shouldve done lol)

  • Kuq Ku

After all she has seen she still calls Roland Ordinary? you really are a muscle head Ashes.

Maggie joining the ranks was a given, she loved being with the witches at Border Town. Roland now has a time frame in which to prepare for the Churches next visit, with that all preparations will be focused on that task, but Im wondering 3 months is a long time to wait for that battle, Im betting someone else will be shit stirring in the meantime. Whether its one of his siblings or some other Faction (maybe another witch faction) I doubt very much that Roland will be going anywhere with this threat looming.

I think Border Town should also be developed at least in terms of communications and easier travel Securing access to those other towns that they get supplies from should also be further developed, increasing their presence/security. Having eyes and ears in these locations could warn them of further threats towards Border Town, he probably already has, but I know he is still lacking in qualified people.

How difficult would it be to set up a telegraph right now?

    • Deman Bloodx

What I got was ‘ordinary’ meant that Roland was not a witch. Tilly is a witch and a noble so they do not have to worry about Tilly’s loyalty. From this chapter, Ashes isn’t a muscle head. Notice, how she predicted all possible routes, even one she only kept to herself. I even thought the best move is to wipe out all the judges even if a few were good people.

      • Gaspar

Thue, but truth be told, I feel for Alice and Abram, the guys were not bad people per-se, but certainly crownies of the church. The priestes, was certainly bad tough.

      • Kuq Ku

She is very much a muscle head, when she met Tilly she was in the process of trying to gain access or get close enough to the arch bishop to kill him. She new those Judges were coming did nothing to warn Roland, only deciding to take care of it herself.

Her arrogance when she thought she would easily win against Roland, and how ready she was to accept the duel when there was obviously no benefit to her, she had no thought that she would lose, even while fighting she didnt have the sense to realize the serious danger she was in.

After she was healed, her first act was to say I won, not think carefully about the situation and use that to negotiate an alliance, because shes a muscle head.

Shes also an idiot for not seeing Roland as being anything but Ordinary, how can she possibly think that after the glimpses she has seen that he is responsible for, she would not relent from her tunnel vision of the Prince from before to how he is now, even the Church recognized the changes in him without physically being there seeing it happen. If just by hearing of his exploits is enough for some to be convinced in his value then Im wondering how a meat head like Ashes was unable to grasp it sooner.

Im not saying shes like the “HULK SMASH” type but her actions are pretty much along those lines, sure she thinks of some of the consequences, and even had the good sense to critique Rolands method of recruitment, saying if she heard it then so can they (the church)

But her ability to understand the finer points outside of the battle arena is limited. She was a poor choice to try recruit other witches from Roland, but this was an opportunity that fell in her lap so she cant be blamed for that.

There are too many examples that we have seen that she relies on fighting more than thinking.

  • DB AV

She is not a comically stupid character but the kind that screws up badly due to a mix of mistrust and arrogance.

  • Zeth

    Thank you!!!

  • Just a Potato

Roland just needs to increase his harem.

  • timbone

    Nooo Abrams!! Why…..Why!!

  • phyrigia

Would there be “undead” skill in witches? Like one can’t die. hahaha… won’t that be awesome?

    • KitKat

I also thought about that, maybe the knight is also a witch

  • Inquisition

When Maggie transform what happens to her clothes and items? What about the birds in her pocket?

  • link556

Wow I thought the leader lady of that church envoy was powerful I guess they all died I don’t think the dual sword lady is dead

    • phyrigia

no.. they all died because Ashes is extraordinary witches. Witches that have skills with the inside own body changes. Like superhuman power, super drawing, super brain.. which only have effect within themselves.

  • Midnight2630

    wait…Alicia simply died?
…that was a hell out of waste of time…

    • josué costa

Yup head cut off, but who knows… She might be a witch with regenerative powers xD

      • phyrigia

I’d be happy if that happens. Alicia would be like “OMG! I’m actually a witch too”. But then, I hope she wont be stupid by going back to the church. The church would surely question her if she’s the only survivor in the massacre. The church would then think that Alicia is a witch. Anyway, any girl survived in this massacre will be suspected as witches by the church. Pretty much..

    • Christian Andrew Virtudazo

Not waste of time. Just unexpected death. 🙂

    • Kik Heirtothestar

no skeptic chat as expect…I wished her change side to Roland ToT

    • mllhild

No, she(Alicia), Ashes internal monologue and the letter gave us a lot of information on the views about the orphans and Ashes fighting power.
      – its normal to buy children to the point that there is a “marked price”
      – even a vice captain of an army knows about the buying of girls(but probably not about the breeding)
      – a first class veteran can hold out to 10 sword strikes against Ashes(with her best equipment and full health)
      – Judge armies are trained for fighting against humans, not monsters or they would have fared better against Ashes

      • Gaspar

I have a corrección, Alicia knew the church takes in orphans, but not necerarily that they are bought, or have a “marketing price” (probably slavery, sexual or not). She is dead now anyway so we will never know.

  • Mohound

Tilly is a witch, alright then

  • phyrigia

see… Ashes made so roland can’t escape by killing the churches envoys. Not that roland will turn his tail again the witches. Did all the envoys dead including Abrams? Now the church will surely think Roland keep witches. But wait… the envoys didn’t even reached Border Town yet…

    • josué costa

Not exactly, they can think at least 3 things out of this:
      A) Roland is keeping witches and killed the envoys.
      B) The envoy didn’t reach their destination. (Remember this is the past and envoys dying in the middle of trips isn’t that uncommon.)
      C) The coalition of witches killed the envoys and Roland don’t have anything to do with them.
And i think everyone is dead… Just look at Alicia she had her head cut off xD

      • phyrigia

I wished some of roland witches followed Ashes and saved like maybe Abrams. oh but… then again, Nana skill can only heal but can not revive anything dead / badly chopped.
Still, I’m sure the church will think the “A”. Because of the rumors roland spread.
Unless they found a clue on the tents… so roland is free of suspect. I mean Ashes only bury the corpses right. Did she also bury or burn the tents, things and etc?

        • josué costa

Probably burned everything she is not that careless, and remember the envoy not reaching benefits the witches the most, not Roland. Just think about it, they not reaching meant that the rumors of the witches gathering near him don’t reach his ears, the church think of him as a blooming youth with great potential in warfare. So i think it’s most likely they will send a bigger squad to scout next, and then make a full blow war, she got him 3 months+Maybe more 3 months. And for Roland that means more weapons, and more fortifications.

  • Cristian N. Hernández

    Thanks for the chapter!

  • Nantoka

    Thanks for the chapter :3

  • icicle

so…forcing the hand of the prince was completely unnecessary….though I understand her mistrust

    Thanks for the chapter

    • Rahmahdi Adi

I think i missing a chapter ir somewhat but not the prunce obviously treated witches as his ally and never treated them as wutches but as someone that have special abilities? And how his sister treatment far better than him?

      • phyrigia

no… you see… the witches only think like that since Tilly is (suspectedly) a witches too. So the witches feels safe for that reason. Not for the treatment reason.
But ‘Roland is just ordinary aristocrat unlike Tilly”. Quite sure what Ashes mean by “ordinary” is human not witches.

        • Rahmahdi Adi

          Oh thanks for the information

        • Reader

I thought she meant ordinary as she felt Tilly was an amazing individual, which she felt during their first eye contact, while Roland doesn’t have that magnificence that Tilly does (brain and temperament wise).

        • VLOCKUP

It’s common thing that witches are only consist of girls. I think “ordinary” means he is cunning aristocrat, the kind that looks ahead and ambitious. Unlike her savior, Tily whom she obviously worships.

      • icicle

Ashes had met the prince before the “reincarnation” so does not fully trust hime. She was saved by the princess at that time. The fact that the princess chose to run is what Ashes believes to be the right choice instead of facing the church like Roland. Unfortunately, you can’t run forever

  • MangoGuy

A bad move for sso many reasons!! Roland now has no warning, and the church will be coming with guns blazing..and a pigeon as a diplomat? I wonder where this will lead to…

    • josué costa

Roland has a warning… The pigeon will tell him, she will probably talk about ashes killing the envoys and about the messages the envoys had.

      • phyrigia

that is if Maggie also read the letter?
The one who clearly read the letter is Ashes.

      • MangoGuy

that is a ll an if!! because the words of the pigeon maynot have credibility!

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • NaoSou

    Thanks!

  • Aldrich Castillo

Just thought of sonething, if the title is, the gift of revenge, and i dont think she’s trying to get back at roland, who would she be trying to get revenge on? The priest? What are the chances the priest is the one who brought her to get raped?? XD

    • Aldrich Castillo

Then again, the gift part wouldnt make sense, so…. meh

    • Rob Gi

All the curch and their doctrine, revenge for other witches wich is clearly said here

  • Royaldarkness

I cann’t wait for this chapter after a lot of assumption from previous chapter that ash are stupid to to this (only half stupid),don’t forget that this is medieval so the travel time from border town to that church city take about 4~6 month so this will take a while before the church notice it (this information is very obious in the first place so it not a spoiler)

  • Rico Sebastian

    Ashes use physicology attack

  • Jeanpiere

    need more :c

    • Mohound

      yep

    • Danis

      a lot more 😛

  • Grey Human

No matter how seemingly benevolent and holy your church is, the one who’s running them are human, and human are creature that hunts animal for enjoyment and will feel no remorse after destroying their living place just because it’s obstruct their view.

    • Alphenex

They also rape little girls, when they take them and are on their journey they were raped and then taken into the place it described the nude men of the church who were cut up by Ashes which allowed Wendy to finally escape, and before she herself was raped and tortured. While the so called benevolent nun helped take her there and told her to just deal with it, it will be easier if she accepted it and it would be over after that. This is not a benevolent church by any means, and it seems they are creating the same monsters only somehow controlling them in order to fight the demon beasts, and using this to gain power and wealth and young girls to rape. Not to mention they know more about the witches and know they are not the devil as they have said it will come out to the public soon which is why they need to unite the continent and solidify their power by destroying anyone who can oppose them before this happens. Then the book which warns that what they did was actually the problem itself, the warning the book had at the end pleading for someone to stop this madness. Alicia is brainwashed and ignorant and turns a blind eye towards despicable things, will not be sad if she makes her exit with the others.

  • Nantoka

    Thanks for the chapter :3

  • MOHLT

I have come to take the most devote believers back to the kingdom of god, oh men of church! Any volunteers?
    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/9d6dc053f48e664cf78f53bf32932a95c7fa3e4f1f87be4cfded31cf5b13b7c4.jpg

    • Mohound

Do you want male of Female devotes?
*Edited because I am an idiot and don’t remember things*

      • PotatoZero

It was already mentioned that Ashes felt magic power when she met Tilly the first time, though

        • Mohound

Where was that, I do not remember this development. deleting that part of the comment

          • PotatoZero

“There was no doubt that the 5th Princess was the protagonist of the day. Her eyes were full of intelligence and clear like two gems; her light makeup together with her long braided gray hair gave her a refreshing and simple impression; standing within that group of brothers and sisters she looked outstanding; the pattern embroidered on her dress wasn’t complicated at all, and it was perfectly matched together with her temperament. But what was most incredible was that she had actually looked all over the rows of people, even directly into her eyes, smiling and nodding slightly, as if the Princess was greeting her personally.

This definitely hadn’t been an illusion. In that short moment, an incomparable feeling of closeness was born inside of her, like they were friends who had known each other for years, warm and sweet. It wasn’t born from any blood relation or by being of similar social status, but rather it came from… the resonance of their magic.”

            From chapter 168

            • Mohound

              Thanks!

      • DudeForDuke

Uh, Ashes saw that Tilly had a magic aura back when she was having a flashback when unconscious. Tilly, too, noticed her (meaning that she is also an extraordinary – because Ashes and Scroll both mentioned that they can see auras/magic of people).

Tilly being a witch is all but 100% verified at this point. I mean, why else would a Princess flee the country and lead a bunch of witches?

        • Mohound

Alright, I fixed it but my first point still stands

  • link556

Does any one think ashes will die here

    • Maxi King

      nope

    • VLOCKUP

If only. The time she dies will be the time when Tily confronts Roland. So far, Tily is an unknown and we can’t rely on Ashes who obviously worships her. But it seems that Tily will be another obstacle against Roland in the future if she really insist on making Witch Kingdom.

Unless she meets her “brother” again and sits down to talk(instead of exposition via Ashes), we have no idea if she will be an ally or enemy.

  • watny Abellard

Ash doesn’t use her brains, Roland spread those rumors, knowing that the church would sent someone to confirm if it is true. If they don’t return then it confirms it. Ash think that Roland couldn’t take care of a small emissary.

    • DudeForDuke

I’m guessing if Ashes had to be broken down as to why she did this:
25% “I-I-It’s not like I’m t-thankful or i-i-impressed or anything” Tsundereness towards Roland following the competition/gift
35% Wanting to try out her new sword
40% Not wanting a chance to pass up killing church officials that have to be of decent rank to come to investigate Border Town

    • timbone

I disagree, she was trying to manipulate Roland and make his decision for him
Personally what annoyed me the most is that she made Roland lose access to some more information, he could have probed the church emissary and also we might have found out more about the church’s breeding and
poor Abrams.. why…why!! Oppa come back

    • Kuq Ku

If that is the case then Roland is extra stupid, he doesnt need that kind of attention when he has to fend off his siblings while modernizing Border Town and creating an army capable of securing the throne.

He needs to lay low, with the news that Tilly has a majority of the witches in their kingdom with her, Rolands focus can be on the children much like the pedos at the Church, except for the right reasons, if he is able to find potential witches it will help him further, while he is at it, perhaps those like Hanas Father, will be empathetic, strengthening his “Witches arent evil, theyre human like us all (with laser pew pew eyes!)” campaign. Speaking of this, how will he do that?

What would have widespread appeal to bring Witches into a more favorable light? Roland has to counter Church propaganda with the truth, but how many would be willing to reject the Church?

If we look at our modern world, we can see how advertising has powered religious holidays like Easter and Christmas, the Easter Bunny has stronger appeal than Jesus dying on the Cross, A fat jolly old white dude in a red white and black suit has more appeal than the birth of God.

But Religion still has a strong hold no matter the current system of separating religion from state or state of neutrality, religious doctrine and tradition has influence, even in the face of the scientific discoveries and advancements, religion still has a stronghold in our society. Roland needs to be very wary of the devout followers of these religions.

    • Kin

Ashes never trust him completely. Thats the main reason, simple as that.

  • Zquirrelthing

From what I can see, it seems Alicia will become something of a permanent character in the future. Maybe this is where she’ll start to doubt the church?

    • mllhild

      Rather a permanent dead character.

      • Zquirrelthing

I highly doubt she’ll be killed here. Doesn’t really make sense story-wise. Why would they establish a character with POV chapters and have her be killed off by a secondary character who has been here for like 10 chapters?

        • DudeForDuke

She’s brandishing a sword at Ashes and she’s a true believer attempting to protect a high level church official. I don’t see why you’d think she’d survive.

          • NickC

Plot armor trumps common sense eveyr time.

            • Alphenex

But stories can use POV characters on rotation to help explain different sides of the story, Alicia has shown the POV of the brainwashed Church following without question while having many of the answers at her very disposal. We will see what the author does though, she could be used by Roland to clear himself of suspicion if he ends up being able to find and save her while hiding the witches, who knows.

              • Jason

I just think it would be really cool in a game of thrones kind of way if Ashes died and the church official makes it back alone to report and becomes the POV character.

                • Aldrich Castillo

I doubt a character here would die 1 day after getting a new wepon made just for her…. also Ashbringer

                  • Zquirrelthing

Never said Ashes would die though?

                    • josué costa

Well the chapter came out we can know now.

              • Jason

It would be dramatic Irony, where Tilly thinks ashes was killed by Roland, and the Church thinks their crew was killed by Roland. Roland just wonders why he hasn’t heard from Tilly. The audience holds the secret, therefore the irony.

            • Royaldarkness

you will suprise in this chapter soon

            • DudeForDuke
          • Zquirrelthing

In real life, I would agree. But this is a story, and a story needs plot devices. Having a brainwashed character suddenly start to doubt the people she’s been with her whole life would be a good plot device. They’ve spent a couple of chapters now explaining their journey to border town, so it’d just be weird in a story sense to kill them off so suddenly.

            • DudeForDuke

…And yet they did. Unsurprisingly. Again, I have no clue as to why you thought she’d survive. In fact, it makes it seem like a ridiculous “good character” Bioware game choice for her to survive. I don’t see how it would improve the story if she did, or how her absence makes it weird. Seems natural to me.

            • VLOCKUP

Alicia is simply used as exposition for the Church side of things(how ignorant she is, etc.). I thought the same too but clearly this is the end of the road for her journey. And Abrams as well.

The temptation is too much for Ashes, who have clearly suffered under the hands of the Church. Ashes is more like level-headed Cara.

    • Exp

It seems more like a cliche must destroy them all complex will be born from this, though from this teaser it could still go either way.

  • Maxi King

    bait them with righteousness

  • phyrigia

ha…Alicia can only say so since she didn’t turn into witches. If she did, she wouldn’t be protecting the church like now..

  • Victor Silva

Bah. Roland must go Henry and found his own Church. One that preaches the power of witch as Saintress and the canon of Engineering as the true revelations of God’s creation. The True Holy Catechesis of Saint Nightgale underwear!
    I hear a ‘Amen” brothers?

  • Robinxen

Didn’t they mention something about a witch being needed to create a Gods Stone of Retaliation?
Sounds like mass production would require breeding, and since the church is responsible for distribution it seems obvious they’d want to manufacture a large number.

    • Wrandral

Well remember the church motto : The lesser of two evils
Easy to choose when those they butcher are heretic witches and that the alternative is to get steamrolled by the devils and the devil beasts

  • BurstThrough

My bet(or at least it is the best argument) is:
“So why are there no boys taken care in monasteries by “god’s kindness”?”

    • mllhild

      Because God is a Lolicon?

      • BurstThrough

        This doesn’t work in God’s favor though…

      • phyrigia

LOLS…. I hope you wont get punished by god.

        • Wrandral

I think his/her god is Saito the god of Loli so no punition hahaha

          • Seikatsu Suru Hitsuyousei

            You Mean Satou right?? XD

            • Wrandral

              Oops my bad

      • Mohound

or if God is a girl?

      • FranckOA

Priest and kids… Same old, same old…

        • esya

          No priests are shotacon usually

    • Icarus

what would roland do with a harem of bishounens? the witch power makes them good looking too.
if anything there’d be hard competition. and there’s the fact that a regular magic society would have been born that way if both genders got powers.

      • BurstThrough

I’m talking about God not Roland…

      • Kuq Ku

What about intersex people, what if one of them came to be a witch.

Im wondering why only girls can be witches? what if those devils are the male versions?

        • Icarus

I have no idea what intersex people are. If you mean hermaphrodites then meh they are extremly rare and they could go both ways for getting powers.

And you have a point. According to Roland it’s some energy. If it can make girls prettier than it can make guys muscular and more demonic looking.

Though probably better than having people mistake your gender because they look too feminine. We don’t need more hideyoshis in fiction.

          • Kuq Ku

In all honesty I doubt that an intersex child would survive, probably condemned as evil and killed, maybe.

    • Deman Bloodx

The boys are taken care of by priests… in real life.

    • Christian Andrew Virtudazo

      The answer is always rape.

      • Wrandral

Church rape the worst kind after teacher rape and police rape because they should be the last kind of people you’d see doing the raping

        • BurstThrough

          All rape is bad.
The worst is dependent on wounds and aftereffects.
Besides the torture rapists the worst is when the people consider the victim a liar(wich is quite common in cases which the rapist is a family member so the people refuse more of personal pride, denying being related to a rapist and ignoring the victim’s well being)

      • BurstThrough

Not exactly rape(the answer is witch) but it does INCLUDE rape

    • Kuq Ku

They have both shota and lolis in those monasteries, they just happen to need the witch potential kind, shota pedos bleh vomit, but if both boys and girls had the talent, Im sure those pervs will be in 7th heaven.

      • BurstThrough

There is no mention of that in THIS church. And do you remember of the carriage rider’s chapter and the letter for Roland?
The church is ONLY TAKING GIRLS!
The shota pedos need to personaly get the poor victims off the street closest to themselves and keep them with the money of their own pockets(or steal church funds but steal means out of the norm anyway).

        • Kuq Ku

I know that, but theyre also harvesting soldiers for their Judges and Gods army, they recruit all in service of their Church, theyre in need of many things not just for sex.

          • BurstThrough

It does not mention how they recruit men much.
Maybe they recruit teens for the army or have some minor institutions for those soldier recruits but I doubt such places are as isolated as the monasteries.
Also don’t think they take male babies.

            • Kuq Ku

Religions indoctrinate their youth, male and female, the younger they get them the better. This particular church might not necessarily scout them like they do females, but thats not to say they dont, grooming their youth to take key positions throughout the kingdom as they get older would be beneficial, look at that Devout follower who was used to replace the King.

Male dominance is key, sure there are examples of women in this story with high positions, Garcia and Tilly leading their own lands, Priestesses from a common background, and of course our witches.

There is an obvious class system in place here, bigotry exists on all levels, The church seemingly provides a place where status or sex doesnt matter, so long as you perform well for the church, they make good use of everyone.

Totally devout followers would be a sensible plan when moving the churches wishes out to the masses and future plans, as said earlier, the younger the better.

  • watny Abellard

Hahaha Ash think Roland couldn’t handle this emissary group, If they really came to border town then it would been a different story. Roland would have learn a lot for them coming here; Roland knows how to use his brain unlike Ash.

    • VerneJules

Actually, I think this is fine. If one of the party members survives, gets to see Border Town, and is able to go back to the Church, they would then know a lot of information (inventions, maybe weapons, and confirmation of Roland’s heresy). But now since they don’t get to reach Border Town, even if they go back, Roland’s connection to witches would still be speculation and they’d still hesitate.

If they indeed get confirmation of Roland’s actions, they could then start propaganda against Roland which is something Roland would obviously want to avoid. Best case, no one survives so Roland would have more time to strengthen Border Town.

      • Wrandral

Yup it is better that they do not reach Border Town before he has enough hold over it’s new population coming from the West

      • watny Abellard

People who comes to border town won’t see the inventions, Roland choose to spread rumors because most of the time they can’t be true. The church choose to sent emissary because they want to confirm if it was true. If the emissary hasn’t return then they think something is wrong so they will sent more people. Roland already know that but Ash doesn’t because Roland knows that if you sent a party and they don’t come back then lets try it again. Roland knows how to buy his time, Roland already predicted that the emissary will come because he has some area off limits( top secret) , also he can silent them. The church won’t move toward border town because it is far.

        • VerneJules

It’s a missionary mission. Supposedly if the rumors were true, they’d go back and inform the higher-ups and if it wasn’t, they’d stay and build a Church to influence Border Town people. Definitely better to have annihilated them since they would’ve caused several headaches (stirring up the crowd of Border Town, etc.)

          • VLOCKUP

Since they are killed off, there will be new headaches in the coming months of Roland’s rule.

I do hope Maggie got influenced so much that she will tell the Witch Union about her role given by Ashes. Unlike Ashes, she doesn’t have Tily worship and with her gaining real friends and home, she will expose herself later.

  • MangoGuy

    Time for some debate!!

  • II Malorne II

Aah the ignorance and fear of the unknown leads to the belief of an unknown entity which in turn is based on ignorance. The ironic circle of ignorance.

  • Neruz

    Such indoctrination, very ulterior motives.

  • VerneJules

I’m wondering about that “treatment of the fallen ones”. Probably related to how they got a witch to imitate King Wimbledon. They might have a means to brainwash the witches they breed.

I’m quite interested if there would come a chapter where Roland gets to have a dialogue against the church. Would it turn out into an atheist debate?

    • Neruz

It might, but then again it might not. Roland would be able to hit them both with proof that they are wrong about the ‘devil’s bite’ and that the Church are hypocritically making use of the very witches they claim are evil. Roland doesn’t need to debate the status of God because the Church is blatantly lying to everyone and has only been getting away with it because they declare anyone who asks questions a heretic.

      • DudeForDuke

This. Roland would be hitting a dead-end trying to address their religion. That’s not a good plan.

However, if he came across evidence that the church was corrupt-as-hell and hypocritically using witches in their services (and they are – a witch changed the appearance of that Judge that took the place of the King)… Oh boy. That would piss the people off something fierce.

And then Roland could press that. “Why would the church do that if the witches were evil? Perhaps the church realizes that they are not evil and instead wishes to keep the witches only to themselves for power? They lie and convince all that the witches are evil so that they may retain their abilities for only their benefit, instead of that of the people. Perhaps the real evil are the corrupt church leaders.”

I’m sure Roland would prefer to just avoid the religious angle entirely, but this is an era before mass education and literacy… You can’t always get what you want. What matters in the end, however, is simply getting the people to turn against the church’s authority if even a little and stop killing witches.

    • timbone

I am betting on an atheist debate. There has been so much foreshadowing since Chapter 1

      • DennMael

I hope not, that should be about as effective as countering the church’s “lesser of two evils” philosophy with a lecture on the subjectivity of morality. The best ‘atheist’ argument Roland can present is providing a prosperous, healthy, and safe kingdom without the church.

    • mllhild

I think Wendy mentioned that some sisters “suicided” by swallowing the gods locked of protection. Probably the ones who where useful and willing were kept, and all others forced to kill themselves.

Still, I have no Idea why they would want to breed the girls.

      • VerneJules

Maybe to feed the Church members’ lust? Since they seclude themselves, they would want women who won’t get pregnant?

Obviously, if they could breed witches while all other countries kill witches, then they could monopolize the use of magic to themselves.

Probably, their method of brainwashing the witches might be similar to making the God’s Punishment Army.

        • Wrandral

Though this bring the question of If witches are bred does it mean that the child of a witch will automatically be a witch ?

          • Green Apple

It was said that witches can’t have children. More likely guys from church are perverts and it’s the case of pedophilia. Remember that little scene where they were gathering little girls?

            • Zquirrelthing

Maybe they know of a solution to the witches infertility? They seem to be hiding a lot that we don’t know of, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.

              • Green Apple

I think that the breeding thing is when they take lots of normal girls and make them pregnant to have more girls. And when they have more girls they wait for them to turn into witches.
I can assume that they feed them with some weird stuff to improve the chance of turning in the witch. This drug may affect the girls themselves or their drugs can influence the babies of the pregnant ones.

                • Zquirrelthing

Seems a bit inconvenient though, doesn’t it? Seems a lot more convenient to get girls by taking them from orphanages and whatever they’re doing in the open. Like, there’s so much they would have to keep secret in order for it to work, that it sounds like it takes far more effort than what it’s worth.

                  • Green Apple

I won’t be surprised if the actual thing is that they gather young girls to sell them as business and have additional source of income and if one of them turns into witch – they take them as thats the main goal.

                • DennMael

That’s making a few assumptions, though. We’d have to know more about witch’s fertility. Is it the result of being a witch, or is it a side effect of the pain the “demon’s bite”. By now, Anna or Nana should have had a few cycles if they aren’t infertile.

If the church doesn’t have a way to solve the witch’s infertility ‘problem’, then the constant rapings are probably testing to see who is a witch by seeing who can become pregnant. A f***ed up, but effective, litmus test as far as they are concerned.

        • Sal

I think that the Witches the Church has are for the creation of their pills and God’s Retribution Locket. If you think about it the Locket is only effective within a certain range, oddly like a Witch’s power. It’s like an enchantment type power, but in order to make it permanent they ripped out a Witch’s powers to fuel it indefinitely.

As for the raping, it’s probably used to discover witches. It serves a twofold purpose of being a traumatic event that can awaken their powers and an even if they hide it somehow there is no way to hide the lack of pregnancy after being continuously raped for a long time. For all the Church claims witches are evil, they are a thousand times more so.

        • mllhild

Another option would be that they try to forcefully awaken the Witch power in the girls by traumatic experiences.
