Chapter 161 Alchemy and Chemistry

The principle behind a DC Generator and its structure was very simple. During his childhood, Roland had once taken apart more than a dozen four-wheel drive motors. From the ordinary stock motors, to the legendary golden panther, and also the build it yourself type hand rotators made out of copper wire. These motors were all considered to be regular DC motors.

There was no difference in the structure of DC Generators and DC Motors, at their essence, they were all the same thing, their function was interchangeable. As long as there was another machine to help the rotator of the DC Motor rotate, and causing the wire to continuously cut through the magnetic induction line, it could continue to generate and induce an electrical current without end.

With the help of Anna and Mystery Moon, Roland needed only half a day to finish assembling a simple DC motor. All the parts of the stator were made out of wood and then given to Mystery Moon for her to magnetism them. The rotor was made of a wooden log with commotators embedded at the tip of both ends. The rotor would be connected by a shaft to the steam engine through a hole in the center. This structure was very convenient to produce, but at the same time it also ensured that the commutators would be isolated from each other.

As for the new steam engine, Roland and Mystery Moon just stood to the side and looked on as Anna performed her incredible processing techniques. If they needed to make larger parts, she would spread out her black fire, wrap it like a cover around a bunch of ingots and let them melt within the cover. She would then mold the iron into the required sizes. Afterward, she only needed to cut out the right form.

On the next day, when Roland was ready to go to the calcining room in his backyard to test out the generator’s effectivity, the guards also brought him some very pleasant news. The Chief Instructor of Silver City’s Alchemy Workshop had come to Border Town, and also, there was more than one other person that had come with him.

Kyle Sichi acted in a very decisive manner, in the afternoon, on that very same day he took his family and more than a dozen disciples with him and boarded on the next merchant ship heading towards Border Town. Unfortunately, Chavez had ended up hesitating for a long time, but in the end, decided to reject Kyle’s invitation.

Kyle hadn’t disclosed the contents of the letter to any of the other alchemists since the more people who knew about it, the later the departing time would have to be scheduled. Kyle worried that it wouldn’t take very long before the news about his success in reproducing Crystal Glass would reach the Duke’s ear, and if by then he still wanted to go out, now after becoming known to have the ability to create high-profit luxury products, the Duke certainly want to keep him firmly under his control.

He had written down the formula for crystal glass and its firing method on paper, then stored it in the formula cupboard of the refining room. This would in turn also give the Duke the opportunity to heavily invest in the production of crystal glass and in so doing also invest in the Alchemy Workshop indirectly. But comparing it with learning about the truth of alchemy, whether it was the recipe of crystal glass or the Alchemy Workshop in general, they both wouldn’t even be worth mentioning.

Five days later, Kyle finally had the opportunity to see the author of the letter, Roland Wimbledon.

Right now they were in the castle’s reception hall, and Kyle had just finished giving his greeting, but even before he had placed his butt on the chair, he couldn’t stop himself any longer from speaking out. “Your Highness, I would like to have a friendly conversation with your alchemist.”

“My alchemist?” Hearing his question the Prince just grinned “Before you came to Border Town, we had no alchemist here, but from now on you are my alchemist.”

“You mean … those alchemical formulas, were written by you?” Kyle suddenly thought of another possibility, my counterpart is a prince, who has received all his knowledge from private teachers and other mentors. So, if he knows about these formulas, doesn’t this mean that King’s City Alchemy Workshop had already known about the essence of alchemy for a long time? And we, in our delusion thought we were finally getting ahead of them, now that seems to be just utterly ridiculous.

“Not exactly,” Roland said. “These formulas came from an ancient book which were written more than four hundred years ago and were recently discovered by me. It seems that hundreds of years ago they called alchemy ‘chemistry’.”

“What…” When Kyle heard that the formulas didn’t come from King’s City’s Alchemy Workshop, his heart suddenly felt a lot better. But the Prince’s answer still surprised him. An alchemy book that was more than 400 years old? One had to know that even the King’s City’s Alchemic Workshop only had a history of less than 200 years, could it be that the later generation will also look at our inventions?

“Yes, in the book, those scholars had formulated a hypothesis, which they called, “The Theory of the immortality of matter.” It states that matter which is the source of all things in the world will neither disappear nor will it increase. It will only transfer from one form to another. But in the end, they are all a piece of the same cake,” Roland pointed to a cake placed on a nearby table, “If you eat that, it will enter your stomach, from there some of the parts of which it’s formed will be absorbed by you, becoming a part of your body, while the rest of it will be excreted. So, if you now would take the integrated parts and the expelled parts and compare them with the former cake, the quality of the matter should still be the same.”

“Hold on… Your Royal Highness,” Kyle expressed his thoughts, “If I take a piece of wood, cut it and burn it to ashes, no matter how much it previously weighed, the weight of the ashes after the fire will be lighter than that of the former piece of wood. If the matter didn’t disappear, then where did it go?”

“These problems are also explained in the books,” Roland said laughingly. “The missing matter was turned into gas and water, and the water was heated up so much that it turned into gas as well and evaporated. So, in the end, you can only see the residue from what was left behind.”

“Gas?” Kyle got an unexplainable feeling in his heart, “Do you want to say that the air also has a weight?”

“Of course, the air also has mass.” The Prince nodded in confirmation, “It is also very easy to verify this point, just put a pile of sawdust into a bottle, then cover the bottle and place it on a scale. Afterward, you set the sawdust in the bottle on fire and weights it again. you will eventually discover, that the weight of the bottle hasn’t changed. This is because the gas had no way out and still remains inside the bottle.”

“This… was this also written in the ancient books?” Kyle eagerly asked, “Could you let me see that book?”

“You can, if you accept a few of my conditions first,” Roland gave him a piece of paper.

“You only have to name them.”

“First of, if you want to work for me, your salary will be calculated according to the regular payment of Silver City’s Alchemy Workshop. Secondly, once you accept this job, you must comply with the confidentiality regulations. That means, everything you learn has to remain a secret to other alchemists. Thirdly, if you agree to the terms, you have to sign this contract.

“The deal lasts for a period of five years and when the five years are over, you are free to go on to choose your own fate. Furthermore, your alchemy discoveries won’t be placed under the confidentiality restrictions any longer. You will be free to show your discoveries to your colleagues at the Alchemy Workshop. If you accept these three conditions, according to the contract, Border Town will provide you with free housing and a chemical laboratory. And lastly, I will lend you the book title “Elementary Chemistry” to study, and if there is something that you don’t understand, you can always come and ask me.”

These doesn’t seem to be very harsh conditions, Kyle thought, although those words such as confidential regulations, chemical laboratory and so on are really hard to pronounce, I think I was able to grasp the general meaning, also, a five-year contract also isn’t that long. Kyle had previously thought that the Price would make it a requirement that he would have to stay in Border Town forever.

And… even if he had demanded harsher conditions, Kyle would still have wanted to see the book with his own eyes, the book on which was recorded the essence of alchemy.

After he had thought it through, Kyle got up from his seat and bent his waist: “I’m willing to serve you, Your Royal Highness.”

“Excellent, now we have a deal,” the Prince did not seem to care about the etiquette, “Your workplace will be directly beside the Redwater River. After signing the contract, I will take you with me and have you familiarize yourself with the laboratory I will introducing you to the usage of the glassware and informing you about the workplace’s rules.”

Hearing all this, Kyle felt that there was something wrong with this situation, how can it be that the Prince is so skilled in alchemy, making people think that he is always keeping another card up in his sleeve? Shouldn’t he be just some ordinary noble that found an ancient book and simply brushed up against alchemy?

However, these were all only minor details, he suppressed his doubts and asked, “Does Your Highness need me to refine something for you?”

“I do, I need a highly-concentrated acid. The higher the concentration, the better.” The Prince replied.

  • Xegqu

    Thanks for the chapter.

  • Zeth

Thank you very much for the chapter!

  • NaoSou

  • MangoGuy

    All hail chemistry

  • the evil one

why im i always late here?

and tnx for the chap BTW

    • MangoGuy

      I am worse off…

  • kirindas

    Thanks for the new chapter!

  • I wonder if there’s a possibility that he will work together with Tilly… Then they go incest or something.. no, wait, forget that I’ve ever said that! I’m afraid not many incest-lovers here.. ‘like me’.. no! wait! forget that I’ve ever said that as well!!

    • DudeForDuke

Well, technically, the original Roland is dead and gone. All that remains is his body with another mind in it.

…Technically not incest? And chances are Tilly can’t get pregnant… because reasons… So… Maybe? Considering Roland hasn’t even touched Anna or Nightingale yet despite having such desires, it seems unlikely however. I wouldn’t put too much hope into seeing a Oreimo-like story here.

      • Well yeah, the first reason I thought of the possibility for incest-like thingy to happen was that the new Roland isn’t technically the old Roland, so I thought there’ll be slightly more chance for it to happen. Not that I’d complain even if it was an “actual” incest though (Mahouka’s fan here. Oreimo was fun, but it was disappointing that they ended their relationship in the end, somewhat).
I’m not specifically hoping for it though and I’m not really expecting that it’ll happen since as you’ve mentioned, he hasn’t even touched Anna or Nightingale, not to mention another girl, that’s even younger than him, and in fact blood-related to him (well, his new body, that is).
As for pregnancy, I wasn’t really thinking that far, since usually child from incest-relationship has various “problems” anyway. Though it’s still not confirmed whether Anna/Nightingale can have a child either. They’ll no longer suffer from the Devil’s(?) Bite so there may actually be a big chance for it to be possible, however.

      • MOHLT

only science can satisfy his sexual urges

        • Psychronia

Science boners are the best boners.

    • Prongsjiisan

Nope… Tilly maybe will respect Roland. But Incest.. she’ll have Anna and Nightingale as Rival. And mind you those two are the strongest witch for now.

  • DudeForDuke

“From the ordinary stock motors, to the legendary golden panther”

I’ve been trying to figure out what the hell this is. Google Translate of the raws translates this to “Gold (sometimes “King”) Speedmaster.” Unfortunately that’s just saturated with search results for a wristwatch that Omega makes, not much in the way of engines/motors. Golden Panther also doesn’t turn up much in the way of engines/motors, either.

Is there a chance it’s like a very specific Chinese thing? Like the Chinese equivalent of a Yugo or a Trabant?

    • M32

The Golden Panther is an electric quad/atv.

  • Danis

    Thanks For The Chapter 😀

  • Kin

Can he just tell them what to do instead of change their knowledge into chemistry?

  • ambi

Thanks for the chapter Roxerer and Jatz!

  • Oak

    Thanks for the chapter

  • Kuq Ku

Mystery moon might develop powers like Magneto!

    • It’d have been great considering that in the current era, knights are usually wearing full-body steel armor and weapons.. Except so far witch’s power can only reach as far as 5 meters from their body. So she can only make a magnetic field which could “possibly” push knights and steel-headed arrows from her body, but she can’t make bunch of knights in the field fly around everywhere. Except.. now that I think about it, she could simply fly around the battlefield with Lightning.. Then again, God’s Stone of Retribution can stop her power, so.. yeah.

      • Psychronia

I’m thinking more along the lines of her gaining the ability to increase magnetic strength in an instant.
If so, she could just “turn on” gigantic metal javelins and let them fly at the nearest armor.

  • Grey Human

    thanks for the chapter

  • icicle

    thanks for the chapter

  • Proxy Account

    (post teaser)
And Roland gives the Alchemist General Chemistry, 10th ed. by Petrucci et al.

  • Neiden

” the quality of the matter should still be the same.”
Shouldn’t it be “the quantity of matter” isntead of quality?

    Thanks for the chapter

    • I know no science, but I think you make more sense.

  • GroovyPotato

From steam to electricity, already? He’s fast.

    • Neiden

He started using steam because he had a fire witch.
Now, he has a magnet witch. So it’s normal to have a huge technological advencement.
Heck, he could probably create a railgun with her around.

  • DudeForDuke

“With the help of Mystery Moon, Roland needed only half a day to finish assembling a simple DC motor…”
I like where this is going.
    Railgun? Railgun.

    • the evil one

      no nid for railgun

just magnetic impulse powered gun will be fine

      • DudeForDuke

…Railgun is the name of the anime/character in the picture. She controls electromagnetism – like Mystery Moon.

        • the evil one

          oh ok ok

well i dont watch to much anime cuz of my work and thing

and i didnt watch that kind of anime too and that i dont know sorry

  • Sorry to digress, but I know that Roland knows that he, rather, the original Roland, was poisoned, and that’s how he came to take over his body. Does he also know it was third sister that poisoned him? I can’t remember if he made that connection…

Someday, I want an encounter where third sister asks Roland “How did you change so much?” And he tells her, “You killed me. And I came back…better.”

    • DudeForDuke

Nope, there’s been nothing to suggest that he knows it was Garcia that did it. I think he suspects that the original Prince Roland died as well as him in his original body on earth. Not much has been stated or hinted about it, however.

      • They caught her spy, though. The maid who threw herself off a balcony when Nightingale confronted her, remember? They had some sort of evidence… 😐

        • Yeah. As far as I remember, it was hinted that he figured out the connection after knowing who she worked for.

          • Gaspar

In fact, in a short sentence said, “after the first atempt failed, dont let the revolt fail” or something that hinted that and Roland tought “so that was how I came here” it is expected and implied that he thougth he died thanks to Her (does not know how) and jokes at the matter, te read the chapters.

        • DudeForDuke

“They caught her spy, though. The maid who threw herself off a balcony
when Nightingale confronted her, remember? They had some sort of
          evidence… :|”

It’s still just a guess on his part. The first message was one that he figured was one of his siblings (it doesn’t state why, however, he thinks this – plenty of people would gladly want Prince Roland dead even if they weren’t in the running for the kingdom). The only bit of circumstantial evidence comes from the second one after Tyre swallowed poison and died, and it references her (presumably) captive sister who likes to watch the sea. From that and a supposed reference to an assassination plot, Roland guessed it was Garcia. That would be rather flimsy evidence to base suspicions off of, however, so much to the point where I question how even if his sister was a conniving b**ch (that’s more Timothy) I can’t see why he’d assume that based off of just that little evidence. And it’s certainly not enough evidence for him to put into motion any kind of response.

    • Ragef33

Garcia already knows Roland is still alive. She had an alchemist make a special poison, but she later learned it didn’t kill him, so she killed the Alchemist for the blunder. Roland concluded Garcia tried to poison him (and as a result woke him up) when the maid’s letter came in.

    • — Someday, I want an encounter where third sister asks Roland “How did you change so much?” And he tells her, “You killed me. And I came back…better.”

Honestly, I think that’ll be freaking epic.

  • MangoGuy

even if he gets a DC generator,he cannot store that electrical energy..and to properly utilise the energy instantaneously,he would require those wires with insulation and stuff lie that..I wonder how he will get around it?

  • Rob Gi

Roland Just needs to make a railgun already and give it to mistery moon, it can be that Hard right guys?

  • DennMael

Honestly, of all the new witches Mystery Moon is probably my favorite. Or at least the one I’m most sympathetic towards. I mean, everyone told her for years “Sure, you’ve got a superpower! Guess what, its useless and a nuisance!”

That’s like when Meg from Family Guy got the power to grow out her nails.

But anyone from earth is like:
“Nikola Tesla’s Ghost, Free Magnets and Electricity for the internet!”

    • Neruz

Honestly even the people saying her power is useless were idiots; Mystery Moon can produce compasses from literally any material on demand. And compasses are a big deal both on land and at sea. Presumably because this world lacks vikings no-one has invented compasses yet.

      • Raufgar

They did mention that compasses are a thing on ships now (Chapter 98), so magnets are not new. Not much beyond that, unfortunately.

Seriously, making magnets out of anything? Gold. Mine. Only thing missing is how to pulse the magnetic fields. Might be able to do so with magnets of varying strengths…I’m no expert.

        • DudeForDuke

“Only thing missing is how to pulse the magnetic fields. Might be able to
do so with magnets of varying strengths…I’m no expert.”

This should interest you… Have you heard of “polymagnets”?

    • DudeForDuke

“Honestly, of all the new witches Mystery Moon is probably my favorite.”

The poor girl needs more attention. She seems to have no self-esteem due to being belittled and abused by assholes like Cara and not even Roland is putting it together how useful and powerful she could be.

…Okay, maybe more than just a little of how much I like her is due to her abilities resembling Misaka from Railgun. Maybe. Just a little.

      • esper

that’s what I think of first when he said her ability could be electromagnet.
        a fckn’ RAILGUN
can’t their cannonball be accelerated when moon moon enchant it with electromagnet?

      • Psychronia

Well. I recall Mystery Moon’s ability being a bit less practical than your examples, since it takes time for her to use her magic on small objects (or was that Hummingbird? ).

Doesn’t make it any less incredible of an invention though. I’m actually wondering if Rowland could do some things even our modern technology either had to jump major hoops to accomplish or outright can’t. I mean, this isn’t the ability to just create magnets; its the ability to add “magnetic properties” to anything, which retains it’s old properties too.

        • DudeForDuke

I know Hummingbird takes some time to lighten larger/heavy objects. The cannons she lightened had to be timed precisely so that the “spell” wore off at about the same rate/time.

As for Mystery Moon, it’s a bit of a weird area. Namely because we’ve seen such precious little of her abilities other than a more elaborate “magnets and stuff” explanation. That said, if she can manipulate magnetism, it means she can manipulate electromagnetism (the two are permanently intertwined as a combined fundamental force – one can can not exist without the other). With Roland teaching her science and her unlocking a new ability upgrade, she could shoot right up to the likes of Anna or something.

I doubt she’ll be as powerful as Railgun and be able to draw iron particulates from the ground/air to use as weapons/ammunition and firing coins via electromagnetism enough to destroy armored vehicles and buildings, but… the same concept is there. The question is to what extent she can access it.

Best way to help her out would be with something like these dynamos and showing to her that magnetism is not just magnetism and that it’s electromagnetism. Use the dynamos to show that magnets can create electricity and that that electricity can create an electromagnet. Might help her consolidate and unify her ability more.

    • VerneJules

Well, I feel that way to all the non-combatant witches. They’re all under-appreciating their abilities.

Echo (sound witch) = could probably even imitate voices, or even manipulate vibrations. Maybe she can cancel the noise of guns and vehicles becoming another ultimate assassin or sniper.

Soraya (art witch) = there’s no better witch if you want to promote the animation industry.

Scroll (bookworm witch) = there’s no doubt about her memory, reading speed (instant OCR), and printing (instant book) but Roland also has to measure her processing speed. Imagine if she could OCR multiple reports and summarize them all into high-level data (high-speed analytics).

Lily (preservatives witch) = could probably control bacteria. This has lots of implications when it comes to military (biological weapons), health, and domestic concerns (countless possibilities of products)

Hummingbird (lightweight witch) = similar to Mystery Moon, imagine how much effort and speed you need to rotate gigantic WEIGHTLESS magnets and how much energy you could get from those.

      • leacherfag

Echo could possibly be a magical Bard. Buffs and debuffs maybe even curse people to death by her songs

      • DudeForDuke

Lily, frankly, scares the living shit out of me because of what she is theoretically capable of. Thankfully, she seems like a nice girl that isn’t interested in it. I mean, botulism goes hand-in-hand with preserving food. If she can influence that now (right now she can prevent it from growing I would imagine), that means she can probably do the opposite as well. She’s controlling microbial life in some fashion. My guess is she operates like Leaves and therefore could do some nasty stuff with them if she wished.

Having read the spoiler thread, Soraya’s ability upgrade is pretty badass and useful from how it’s been described. I don’t know if Roland has used it in any context yet, though.

  • Chiki Amara

    Here we come.. electricity…
Still.. kinda long way to led or dc lamp.. or even neon gas lamp..

  • Gege

DC Motor? Maybe he want to make Tamiya? Lol

  • Rico Sebastian

( During Teaser ) Make her fall in love roland , YOU CAN DO IT XD

    • Raufgar

Might be kinda hard given that she was more familiar with his previous self…will likely take time. Roland should put in effort to mend things with Tilly though…

    • Psychronia

Mystery Moon, on the other hand…

  • DEad

AS previously said creating a transformer, pn junction diode would be easy for a mechanical engineer
the only requirements would be silicon thats basically everywhere
some 3rd and 5th group elements and and just a bunch of coiled wires with anna which he could easily manage
and he could reduce the wieght of the coil in the ac gen with the help of another witch while tasking serfs or creating a miniature dam over the river it will be damn(pun intended)easier and efficient considering future prospects

    • mllhild

      The problems with that idea:
      1. I’m an mechanical engineering student in his last year and have no idea how a diode is made
      2. he has no way of knowing what the properties of the finished diode would be
      3. he needs something that works now, without testing or uncertainty
      4. he is going to build a a lot of generators in the future, he has to if he wants enough electrical energy, and he is going to need AC and DC current
      5. he can’t make a network out of the generators anyway since he has no way of synchronizing their rotation speed, so there is no advantage to making them all the same type.

      • DEad

Yeah i get it silicon is not cheap but i looked up the refinig process its about 2000 Celsius but considering that anna can create flames which emit radiation of such high energies that it is out of the visible spectrum i say its doable with enough time and effort

        • DudeForDuke

While Anna can fire it up to those temperatures and (possibly literally) not even break a sweat, it takes more than just temperature to refine silicon deposits you find. Obsidian, for instance, is natural silicon with other other elements that was melted. While the temperatures were surely hot enough to melt it, it obviously isn’t a result that could be useful to make a diode.

One of the biggest problems refining of materials has faced throughout human history is keeping contaminates out and getting purity of what you want. Even keeping contaminates and other separate elements isn’t always enough – sometimes different isotopes of the same element can compromise your refining.

        • Chiki Amara

This is true.. and after googling a while..
Its called zone refining or zone melting..

    • Proxy Account

You need more than “just” good old Silicon, first, it has to be pure, or approach a high enough purity such that the internal structure of the semiconductor is a crystal lattice which can exhibit movement of carriers under certain conditions. Furthermore, Silicon is indeed everywhere but usually in the form of Silicon Oxide, which is an insulator. It has a high band gap energy (around 9 eV compared to pure Silicon which has about 1.12 ev), and thus you need a lot more energy to liberate a electron or a hole. The fabrication process of semiconductors is still very complicated and specialized, and in Roland’s case, it would really be too exponentially hard. Not to mention he has to separate the Silicon first (well, I wonder if Anna can do it…).

In any case, with Mystery Moon’s ability, I hope she can emit moving magnetic fields, and making use of Lenz’s and Faraday’s law, by having a moving magnetic field over a closed loop of conductor (or a moving closed loop conductor on a stationary magnetic field), she can generate current flow. Increase the loops, and if roland can have some form of storage, he can have a major source of electrical power in that Feudal and Medieval world of his.

Even then, since you don’t need pre-existing electricity to excite magnetic coils (using Mystery Moon’s ability), perhaps Roland can have his first electric car powered by DC/AC/Squirrel Cage motors long before Anna can be expert enough to carve out the precise nooks and crannies of an internal combustion engine.

Semiconductors are still a technological impossibility for Roland, so let’s electrify things first. Give ’em a shock or ten.

      LEL 😀

  • DEad

Wouldnt it be much easier creating a AC generator with the help of the magnet girl and attaching it to a full wave rectifier that would even be much more efficient rather than making a DC generator

    • EdMask

Can electrolysis be made with a AC generator?

      • KimPatsu

Electrolysis needs a positive and negative charge right? Only DC can produce it directly right??

        • DEad

Its really easy you need 2 pn junction diodes which can be made with the help of semiconductors and that is how a full wave rectifier is made
And yes you can electrolysis with that shit

    • mllhild

and Roland is going to buy that full wave rectifier in the hardware store next to castle right besides the Walmart there
