Chapter 121 Looting

When he had talked to all of the five noble families, Roland felt slightly relieved.

When he leaned back into the chair, Nightingale took the initiative to step behind him, putting both her hands on his shoulders and began to massage them.

From the moment of defeating the Duke, up until he had taken over the Lord’s Castle, had needed merely one day.

Things were going much smoother than he had initially thought, the moment after the Duke had died, most of the people had chosen to surrender. For mercenaries, it was more usual to change their sides during the war, so they just kneeled on the ground, saying that they were willing to fight for the prince.

So the mercenaries became responsible for guarding over the surrendered knights and nobles, while the First Army was responsible for guarding the mercenaries. Like this, the big group moved further towards to the east, and in the afternoon at 3 p.m. they finally arrived at Longsong Stronghold. When the guards saw the head of the dead Duke and the other captured nobles, they had immediately opened the gate, letting the 4th Prince into the city.

Roland didn’t wait until all the nobles were gathered, giving them the chance to welcome him with great fanfare and to declare him as new City Lord, instead he immediately left for the Lord’s Castle.

The castle was placed in the middle of the city and looked like a city within the city. When he entered the castle area a small skirmish broke out, Nightingale had to use an explosion cachet to blow open the entrance to the flower garden. Within the garden, more than twenty guards loyal to the old Duke tried to stop Roland from stepping in, but they all were quickly killed by the First Army. However the guards had still been able to use their hand crossbows, resulting in five injuries of which two had been seriously injured, fortunately Nana had come along with the military operation and had quickly been able to heal them.

In the meantime, ten personal guards used this opportunity to take the rest of the Duke’s family to flee through the backdoor, but they were still spotted by Lightning and were captured soon afterwards. The Duke’s wife and her two sons hands were tied and were waiting to be judged – even now they were still in the dark, ignorant of the fact that the Duke had been defeated.

When Roland gained control over the Lord’s Castle, Border Town’s First Army immediately swarmed out and took over the castle district. When comparing the Lord’s Castle in Longsong Stronghold with the castle in Border Town, Roland had to admit that the stronghold’s castle had a much more magnificent shape. It had a hexagonal outline with six watchtowers on its wall, and a five-story high tower in the middle – during this era it was really rare to build places that were this high. Within the castle grounds, there were also the residences of the castle’s inhabitants, warehouses, stables and everything else they needed, the Duke even had his own personal prison under the castle’s basement.

He put the valuable prisoners like the Duke’s family into this exact prison, the civilians were all freed, while the mercenaries had their weapons confiscated and placed into the castle garden or it’s free rooms. At the same time he also picked out some leaders and paid them to keep watch themselves – in Roland’s eyes, the Northern Slope Mine would be the best destination for these opportunistic people, but at the moment he still had more important things he had to do.

Until now, he had still to do the most important task after a battle – which was commonly known as looting the corpse.

Roland together with a witch kept looking over everything over and over again inside of the castle, he hadn’t even let go of the God’s Stone of Retaliation he had found in the vault. After they had searched through everything, the gain was really impressive. Just within two boxes they had discovered in the basement, he found already more than 10.000 gold royals alone. Within a hidden chamber in the bedroom Nightingale discovered several scores of eyeball sized gems. Echo found another chamber hidden behind the fireplace, which wasn’t only filled with a variety of gold crafts, such as the scepter, the crown, etc., there were also many pieces of dazzling jewelry, neatly hung on the wall on a wooden frame.

This were all the Duke’s personal financial resources!

When Roland saw all this great wealth in front of him and compared it with the five hundred gold royals he had gathered in the last two season, his heart was filled with myriads of regrets. He wasn’t prepared for how alluring the feeling of looting was, if he didn’t come from a highly developed industrial era, he most probably would have kept everything for himself.

But now he could only sigh with sorrow, he had to think of the greater picture. In the foreseeable future, the working population in the Border Town would increase substantially, and before he could develop his territorial agriculture, he would need to import large amounts of grain from other sources.

So all the treasure was stored into boxes and were lightened by Hummingbird, then under the protection of Iron Axe and several personal guards, they were brought back to his own castle storage in Border Town. With the time included to enchant everything, the delivery would take around three days.

Because of this, after the second day Roland no longer took in gold royals as ransom. Eating the Duke had brought him many benefits, and now he only needed more living people and animals.

“Your Highness, do you really only want to stay here for a week?” Asked Nightingale.

“What?” Roland had closed his eyes, enjoying the tingling burst coming from his shoulders.

“This is the largest city in the West, right?” She whispered, “compared to Border Town, why don’t you want to stay in this more prosperous place?”

“The power structure in Longsong Stronghold is tangled and complicated, it isn’t suitable for doing what I want to do. And with my plan, we would keep the status quo, what isn’t so bad. If I want to change it, the resistance I would encounter would only become larger, and if I would use cruel ways they would lump together trying to sweep me away.”

Roland smiled and said, “Of course the most important part is, that the people here in the stronghold are deeply affected by the church, so it would become difficult to get the people to accept you. I have once said, that I hope that the witches will be able to walk freely through the streets, and in Border Town, this is now possible.”

“Yeah,” Nightingale said softly, “you have already fulfilled your promise.”

Early on the third day, Petrov brought in his list in a hurry, and as usual Roland received him in the hall.

“Your Highness, I have made my decision.”

“I will take a look.” Said Roland and received the list from him. And just like he had expected, on top of the list with the biggest amount of needed points were serfs with the value of 2, about 800 people, also 100 cattle and 300 sheep for a total of 900 points, the rest were paid with all kinds of craftsmen.

“Your Royal Highness, is this acceptable?”

“Of course, you only had to scrap 3000 points together,” Roland returned the list to him, “By when will you be able to gather all these people and supplies?”

“Today will be possible, at least in the case of the people and other properties they will stay in the Honeysuckle territory, but Your Highness, if you want to bring them back with you to Border Town, it may take about two weeks’ time.

“It’s up to you to organize the transport to Border Town,” said Roland, tapping the table. “As a merchant, you should have the experience of organizing a caravan.”

“Yes, sir.” Petrov hesitated for a moment, “Then my father…”

“You can take him back with you today,” said the Prince laughingly and handed him a parchment scroll. “If you think there is no problem with it, just sign it and imprint your thumb onto it.”

“This is… the representative’s contract?” Petrov only had read the beginning and then he spoke agitated. “Do you really promise to grant the right to govern over Longsong Stronghold to the Honeysuckle Family? Please wait for a moment.” He spread out the scroll and began to read the contract carefully.

Seeing that Petrov showed caution Roland nodded with satisfaction – as a collaborator, paying attention to the contracts is the most basic requirement.

After a while, Petrov raised his head, “This contract and what you told me yesterday, is basically the same, but there is one thing…” He pointed to the end of the contract, “Your Royal Highness, shouldn’t I write my father’s name here? The Count is after all the representative of my family.

Roland smiled, “Of course not, it was you, not your father, who talked with me about the post as representative, so it’s naturally to write your name at the end of the contract.”

For a moment Petrov became startled, he couldn’t believe what he had heard so he asked: “Your Highness, you don’t mean that – ”

“Yes, you will take over the place of the Duke and rule over the stronghold,” Roland nodded. “If you’re able to fulfill the contract, you can continue to rule over the city even after I became the King.” Here he paused and smiled, “But if you break the contract, you will meet the same end as the Duke – since I was able to break into Longsong Stronghold once, there is no problem to do it for a second time. Let’s work well together, Mr. Ambassador.”

I think I like Petrov. You know his father always think Petrov is a useless man that only know how to be a merchant and trader. But seriously that’s what his good point.

    • Michael Twitsucks

He’s probably the first reasonable and intelligent person that Roland has dealt with who wasn’t a part of Border Town. He was even quite civilized to Roland before the Month of Demons even started. And despite what happened and his father being held for ransom (then again, this was common place in warfare at the time, but it still has to be unnerving), he’s more than willing to put aside any differences and prosper together through trade and economic agreements.

Too bad Petrov’s father was an imbecile and didn’t listen to him more. The Honeysuckle family will likely benefit greatly from having Petrov in charge now, however. Best of all, everyone wins in the end.

      • MOHLT

Someone’s father might get into tragic “accident” soon?

    Noooo!! That was anti climatic
When I saw the title as Looting and freed mercenaries in the teaser, I thought that Roland’s troops along with the Mercenaries were going to loot/pillage the city and cause problems for him

    • phyrigia

why would they? looting the duke castle is yes. But the city? no, roland is not stupid enough to loot the city and make it’s citizens angry with him. He’s basically thinking in the long profit gain

      • timbone

        *facepalm* I said mercenaries…

        • phyrigia

“I thought that Roland’s troops along with the Mercenaries were going to loot/pillage the city”?

          • timbone

Yeah I did, I was reading Sevens so I expected looting at least from the mercenaries. Most seem to forget that Roland troops are not from the Stronghold so it wont be looting their own homes

    • mllhild

Which idiot loot his own city?

      • timbone

The mercenaries are most likely from other cities or kingdoms

    • Michael Twitsucks

Roland would go ballistic if his own men started looting. Then again, the entire reason he wanted commoners for his military force was *because* he knew they wouldn’t want to loot and pillage unlike the nobility and men-at-arms/knights.

I’m interested in what will become of the mercenaries. Chances are they’ll just walk off and we’ll never hear of them again, but it would be nice if Roland’s Army got some more volunteers from them.

    • MOHLT

Roland’s army definitely would not loot, mercenaries are too scared even if they were armed.

unless they can get good mercenaries then no… mercenaries basically work based on money and safety. they don’t have loyalty, i think. 1st. good/high pay… the moment they get higher pay, they turn into traitor. 2nd. the moment they are in danger, they just surrender easily. man… no bravery at all. at least the witch is much more better than them.

  • MangoGuy

Kick mercenaries out! Those are just “legalised” bandits.

    • Atamahead027

well, they sway to where the money fall

    • Exp

No, they are cannon fodder. *drum roll and cymbal* typically their loyalty is to the crowns preferably gold crowns that is.

    • Michael Twitsucks

Huh? In antiquity, particularly during the middle ages, mercenaries were a backbone of many armies. In some cases, they were faaaar more reliable and effective than their own “homegrown” forces. While there certainly were some that had a terrible reputation and did horrific things (well, plenty of “noble” knights did horrific things as well – those were the times then), there were also PROFESSIONAL mercenary forces. The Swiss come to mind. They built an industry on mercenary work and did so very, very well. And plenty of people paid for their services because they delivered.

      • nobs

The mercenary companies have never been the backbone of an army but more of a complement for specialized activity (pikes from swiss, crossbows from genova…), otherwise that’s a recipe for disaster cf italian wars, hundred years war…
Being a mercenary means you have to live to fight another day and that you can be bought, totally unreliable for a proper state

        • Michael Twitsucks

“The mercenary companies have never been the backbone of an army but more of a complement for specialized activity”

You might want to look into the history of the Free Companies (Free Lances). They were exactly this during the time, and some smaller states relied heavily (nearly entirely in some cases) on them.

“otherwise that’s a recipe for disaster cf italian wars, hundred years war…”

Those still would have been clusterfucks if not even a single mercenary had been employed.

“Being a mercenary means you have to live to fight another day and that you can be bought, totally unreliable for a proper state”

That last line? Very important distinction… This is before the rise of proper states with consistent and reliable government. Looking at a map of the various borders and state actors in Europe during the middle ages is like looking at a Go board with about a couple dozen different colored pieces on it going back and forth for hundreds of years. Some smaller entities simply could NOT afford a professional military. If they could, mercenaries wouldn’t have been as successful as they were.

      • MOHLT

True, they are useful for making large army with some battle experience quick, but most of time they are little more than bandits or thiefs. Especially if you happen to be low on gold or silver.

Roland intends to make loyal professional army from his own citizens… and doing quite well so far. Why add loyal-less mercenaries? Risk of secret leak or new weapon thief would skyrocket.

Well I guess mercenaries could be used as distraction force away from his cities and main army. Freed and properly paid slaves would be much better bet for making army, even if it would take time to train them.

        • Michael Twitsucks

As of right now, Roland doesn’t really have the population and people to expand much more in the army. He has almost 300 men. Border Town’s population is ~2,000. Having roughly 15% of the your _entire population_ is already stretching Roland thin. See how he’s making emphasis constantly about not getting money, but people? This is why.

As for mercenaries, eh… Many were professional in our past, I fail to see why there wouldn’t be cases of professional outfits in this scenario. There’s also the point that Roland _doesn’t_ have to hire them on as mercenaries. To showcase a point, there was a big hysteria about Rhodesia back during the Rhodesian Bush War days and hardened killers/murderers/thugs being hired on as mercenaries to fight… Except that was complete bullshit (outside of private/civilian security work). All those foreigners ENLISTED in the Rhodesian military, same as any regular Rhodesian citizen. Same can be done here. There’s no reason why a mercenary can’t simply sign on with the First Army and move to Border Town. In fact, if Roland is smart, he’ll hope some of the better ones will do so. Having trained/experienced fighters that are willing to sign on for military service is nothing to scoff at.

Let us not forget that even some of the previous chapters (featuring that guy with “V” name that works on the artillery gun piece crew) briefly mention how some of the First Army recruits from Border Town itself were complete thugs and bastards until they joined on. So long as they do what they’re supposed to, Roland has made it clear he doesn’t care about their origins or past.

As for technology theft… I’ve explained this before, but even if you provided Court “alchemists” working examples and even let them onto the fact that it uses modified celebration powder… It wouldn’t make a difference. The blast furnace doesn’t exist yet. They have no idea how to make rifling. They don’t even know what a mill or a lathe is, much less have one. They don’t know the proper formula for black powder. The entire reason those guns exist without another 5-10 years of making the tools to make them is because of Anna. And even if they could MIRACULOUSLY reverse engineer it (and make no mistake, it would be a small miracle), they still couldn’t make it. Even if they could even build upon that miracle further by making copies of it… there’s absolutely zero way they could make them in any meaningful numbers. Add to the fact that this would be _expensive as hell_ and likely make plenty of unintentional pipebombs that would be more likely to injure the user than anyone in front of the thing, and it makes it even less likely.

          • MOHLT

Roland is getting lots of new residents, he can even get free slaves from stronghold if he wants to. He have lots of gold and open trade routes now too. Zero problems here.

Why hire(or give citizenship) mercenaries when more loyal subjects are available? Both mercenaries and peasants/slaves would still need long training or retraining(Roland’s training regime is different afterall).

Few thugs can be easily kept in check, but not whole army of them. Roland have other plans for mercenaries anyway, one without swords and spears.

You forget ‘the church’. They seems to have witches, very advanced alchemy capabilities(compared to kingdoms) and only author knows that else. At very least finding correct formula and making gunpowder is possible for them. And if you add 123 chapter knowledge, church doesn’t even need guns, they can make gunpowder-suicide-runs possible.

            • Michael Twitsucks

“Roland is getting lots of new residents, he can even get free slaves from stronghold if he wants to.”

Is getting. He doesn’t have them. He’s also getting them in INSTALLMENTS. Over months. That’s no way to build up a population for a military. It’s too slow and spread out over too much time. You need a large group you can train together, not small groups you’ll get months at a time.

              “Zero problems here.”

              Uh, no. Tons of problems.

“Why hire(or give citizenship) mercenaries when more loyal subjects are available?”

Because they don’t exist. See your previous paragraph about how Roland needs those new people and still doesn’t have them. You need to keep in mind what Roland has now. Not what he might have. Not what he wants. What has has. Now. And that’s 2,000 people. He already has FIFTEEN PERCENT of his ENTIRE POPULATION in his military. There’s only SO MANY people that are qualified for military service. And those that are are often in important work like mining, farming, carpentry, blacksmithing, ect. and putting them into the military is just not possible.

There’s also a benefit you’re overlooking: THE MERCENARIES ARE TERRIFIED OF ROLAND FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. Some hackjaw that has never heard of Roland or what he’s doing? They don’t. The mercs have a respect/fear of what he is capable of and they aren’t stupid.

“Both mercenaries and peasants/slaves would still need long training or
retraining(Roland’s training regime is different afterall).”

1.) This is false. Peasants/slaves have ZERO basis for military training and experience. Mercs, by definition, do.

2.) Roland’s training regime is based extremely heavily on two things: Physical fitness and teamwork/unit cohesion. Peasants that have never marched and are malnourished have no training nor experience in anything Roland would be training them in. Mercs do.
3.) Mercs need less retraining and can be used as a police/militia force or auxiliary forces to free up the Border Town First Army from doing mundane shit they would otherwise have to do (and if you’re worried/paranoid, they can do it without being issued firearms). I don’t need to emphasize how advantageous this is.

“Few thugs can be easily kept in check, but not whole army of them.”

As I’ve explained multiple times, your assertion that “all mercs = nothing but thugs” is a personal bias. It is not fact or truth.

“You forget ‘the church’. They seems to have witches, very advanced
alchemy capabilities(compared to kingdoms) and only author knows that else.”

Not forgetting the church. You’re forgetting what they’re putting bets on. They gave up on the idea of witches and regular men for armies for whatever their coming prophesy armageddon thing they have. They’re betting almost everything on what? God’s Divine/Punishment Army.

All that research their R&D branch is doing? It’s all witch and demon related. None of it is related to hard science. The only known entity that does that is the Court alchemists.

“At very least finding correct formula and making gunpowder is possible for them.”

Sure. Eventually. Trial and error would win. They still can’t make guns, however. And you’re talking about something that would take money/time/manpower away from what they know what works and what they want (Divine Army). This could also take YEARS. And, then, where would Roland be? Oh, the church has somewhat usable blackpowder. Roland is moving onto Maxim machine guns and steam-powered tanks (for example). Even if they could do it (they can’t), it still wouldn’t help them.

              “Church doesn’t even need guns”

That’s good, because there’s no way they can use them.

              “they can make gunpowder-suicide-runs possible”

An attack that once successful is easily countered with security measures. GWoT counter-tactics against this are well known and publicized. Roland would stomp that shit out pronto.

              • MOHLT

“Is getting. He doesn’t have them. He’s also getting them in INSTALLMENTS. Over months… // …and putting them into the military is just not possible”

Over weeks and number of new residents stated as ‘large’, please reread. So zero problems, because he is getting people soon.

                “1.) …Mercs, by definition, do”

Ofcourse they do, but in wrong areas. Explanation on part 2).

“2.) Roland’s training regime is based extremely heavily on two things… // …Roland would be training them in. Mercs do”

Roland’s training regime is bit more complicated: He aiming for specific parts of physical fitness – stamina and upper body and leg muscle endurance training(for rapid and long marches, not long combat in melee which mercs trained in and they are not pro-mercs, so even their experience is quastionable), teamwork and discipline. Which mercs as seen in battle and judging from Honeysuckles observation over Roland’s troops, lack all of them. Thus they need total retraining.

Weapon training consists of: teamwork with pikes and teamwork with guns, which mercs lack again. At best those mercs can do is more powerful trust of spear, that is it.

“3.) …I don’t need to emphasize how advantageous this is.”

You mean you need emphasize how dangerous this is? They still need to armed with something and they would be spread around freaking everywhere. Thief possibility skyrockets and if they rebel within city – cannons are useless, firearms usefulness is limited. Plus such move might lower citizens morale, because no one wants to “protected” by people who obey only the gold.

Auxiliary forces is good choice as long as they kept away from border town and main army.

Roland’s troops not going to fight anytime soon, they are completely free to do “mundane shit”, help to train new troops, hunt for food, raise citizens morale just by being in town, etc.

“As I’ve explained multiple times, your assertion that “all mercs = nothing but thugs” is a personal bias. It is not fact or truth”

You talked about professional mercs, mercs we are talking about are not professionals. You talked about modern mercs, these are not modern mercs… You talked about mercenaries as business branch such thing does not exist in the story.

You just can’t tell apart bad and good merc… so best is just to keep them all away and use only in specific situation. Roland stressed point of uncertainty of mercs/outside troops himself and in following chapters he moved mercs into mines, to fight against rocks with pickaxes.

“All that research their R&D branch is doing?.. // …The only known entity that does that is the Court alchemists.”

In 123 chapter it is pretty clear that Church have advanced alchemy or a witch which good at alchemy.

“Not forgetting the church… // …They’re betting almost everything on what? God’s Divine/Punishment Army.”

They are not betting on God’s Divine/Punishment Army, but on best method which is known to them. If new method pops, things can change.

Rest of stuff purely answers to wild speculations with other wild speculations and these can only be answered by other wild speculations…
