Prologue

“Hm hm hm~,” Gu Qingyu1 was humming softly to herself as she organized her belongings.

A thunderstorm raged outside the large building as heavy rain created a frightening cacophony of sound as raindrops hit against the window pane.

Gu Qingyu, a 23 year old professional psychiatrist, worked in the most famous and prestigious hospital in City A.

She proficiently put her belongings into her backpack and looked at the time, “23:15… Ugh, it’s so late already, ah… ”

Gu Qingyu carried her backpack and entered the elevator.

25… 24… 23…

All of a sudden, the elevator stopped at floor 22, and halted its descent.

What is going on?

Gu Qingyu, an avid reader of web novels, started to imagine a scenario similar to those ghost stories that she had read… She looked at her wristwatch. It was pointed to exactly midnight!

The elevator door suddenly opened. At the same time, a bolt of lightning ruthlessly struck on the outside of the building.

A black-clothed person stood outside the elevator, his face covered by a hat. His dry, twig-like hand stretched out slowly, trembling towards her.

Without hesitation, Gu Qingyu immediately pushed him away and rushed out.

What was that about? What is happening? Aren’t hospitals supposed to be filled with doctors and nurses working overtime?! Why?! How did this weird person suddenly appear?! Who is he?! What is he up to?!

Without a moment to spare, Gu Qingyu sprinted with everything she had. Her body’s natural instincts made her incapable of stopping her legs—because she had a sudden premonition; she would be caught with the slightest hint of delay, and the outcome of getting caught would be…

She arrived at the stairway passage and continued downwards…

Behind her, the sound of footsteps seemed to follow her closely, as if they were directly behind her…

What should I do? Anyone? Help?!?

Within a few moments, she ran all the way down to the lower ground floor, floor negative two… The mortuary!

Gu Qingyu hesitated, but nevertheless ran inside, bracing herself.

She shut the door and looked around, “This seems-… Ngh!!

Her mouth was suddenly covered by a hand, and in the next moment, she felt a sharp aching pain well up in her chest area. Lowering her head, she saw the tip of a knife sticking out of her chest, as thick blood dripped down along the point.

She wanted to turn her head, to take a look at that person…

I’ve never asked for much in my life, who could it be… that have such deep hatred towards me…

Perhaps, I ran into a ghost?

The knife slowly pulled out, Gu Qingyu fell powerlessly down onto the ground.

She gradually felt her consciousness fading away…

How can this be…

Who exactly was it that wanted to kill me?

She tried opening her eyes wider to get a clear look at the person’s face, but her vision gradually grew more hazy as time slowly passed. Her eyelids felt heavier with each passing second.

Her soul seemed to break away from her body…

What should I do… I don’t want to die yet… Ah… somebody… save me…

In the unseen world, a faint, indistinct voice seemed to be calling for her…

“I can grant you one more chance. Go to another space-time and retrieve your…”

My? What?

Gu Qingyu tried to listen more attentively, but the sound grew faint…

Before her eyes, she seemed to see a shadow, but in the end it was too obscure…

At last, complete darkness.
